Smile ElephanT's 1988 4Runner Build-Up Thread

Hello fellow yoda-ers!
I hold the pinkslip to an 884runner i bought for $2000. She came with bald tires... a crap stereo... and a 220,000 mile classic 22re, a missing passanger door pannel and window motor, and thats really about it... Not bad huh?

Since Ive had it Ive put on 31 BFG AT tires
New stereo
Home brewed front bumper and racks for the surfboard

As far as goals go... for now they are to just clean it up. I'm not interested in a lift or anything, it does just fine the way it is and what I use it for. I plan on keeping it for life and when i have the money to do things right and this isnt my dd, thats when the mods will start to happen. I'm a fan of home made things because their unique and although my home made creations might not be eye appealing... im definatley learning from all of you guys, the search button, and just getting my hands dirty!
But things that are coming soon are
New clutch:that will be my Christmas present
New shocks(dont tell anyone... but mine are still original)
Lift up my rear end to get rid of the sag-a-lag
Get rid of the ugly stock stripe stickers
Replace my cracked window
Front corner light+blinker mod
Paint up the undercarriage
Get my passenger door panel working(if you have a panel you want to sell, pm me!)
Get my dash lights working...(Any ideas???)

Ended up going with the marlin clutch. Will be putting this in most likely after Christmas...

1 x Super Heavy Duty Clutch Kit (1,600 lb) - $169.00
1 x Heavy Duty Pressure Plate Bolt Kit - $9.00
1 x Heavy Duty Shifter Socket - $6.00
1 x Heavy Duty Shifter Seats - $10.00
1 x Heavy Duty Transmission Output Seal - $12.99
1 x Shift Handle Boots - $10.30
Total for this Order: $254.38

And from Napa Auto: engine output seal $15.00, transmission input seal
$5.00

Also I ended up ordering the wrong shifter seat. Its blue and I should have gotten red... I called up the company and their sending the right seat free of charge! I like this company. So if any of you need a blue shifter seat, ill be happy to mail it to you for free

Yep I already do spend a lot of time on here haha and looking for only 1st gens!

Today I got bored so I went to lowes and picked up a sheet of plywood and 2 2x4's and started working on the back interior pannels. I was missing one and the other side was just basically staying there because of the roll bar. So I made my pannels and had half a sheet of plywood left and started to experiment. So what I have now is a 60% complete carpet kit in the back of fiona. Maybe the first for a 4runner? Anyways I want to carpet it and put a little more reinforcement in... I think itll look sick with the top off and carpet plush with the bed and a soft top, mmm!

Heres what I drilled into:

The pannel:

An idea of the carpet kit:

And... offer this guy some tires or somethin! Really clean though!

And Ill get pictures of the racks soon!

So the clutch is in took about 8 hrs to do... Its amazing how much different a new clutch will make! Some people say that it takes a little getting used to the marlin clutch but not really... its not much different. The old clutch plate was worn down to the rivets and was starting to wear into the flywheel haha but once the flywheel was machined there was no problems. The throw out bearing made a big ring on the clutch springs, my dad said hes never seen such a worn out clutch. So with the 1600 lb clutch from marlin after a rev, the engine will come back to idling much faster, it gained power, and better gas millage, as well as burn out capability! Im very happy with it and I recommend it to you all!

Next steps: Finish the carpet kit and show you the racks
Im trying to figure out if I should get a rear bumper from marlin or a rag top... rag top is more in the budget haha
