22re question on head gasket
questions
i was off road today, and it sounded and looked like i blew a head gasket.
i got it towed home and before i pulled the head off i noticed water coming out the back of the engine between the head and block, pulled the head off just enought to see all 4 cylinders full of water and it to all gush out towards the firewall.
head gasket wasnt damaged from the looks of it. but i did notice the back 2 main bolts were only hand tight
so what are the chances of it just being the head gasket and mis tourqed bolts?
whats the chances of it being a cracked head?
and any recommendations on how i handle this

Did it overheat?
With the head off, its a small fee to have it checked (less than a machinist straight edge would cost you)
If the head is fine, put it back together with a new upper gasket set.
Your typical head cracks between the intake and exhaust valves.

no didnt over heat. normal temps. wasnt even hot when i touched everywhere on it. got done crawlin a hill and came to a stop. you could here that it was missing on one of the cylinders. so i killed it. checked everything that i could see. went to kick it over and by that time im guessin the cylinders were full of water cuz it wouldnt even fire.
but it has to be head gasket and the 2 rear head bolts if it was seaping a lil water before i undid anything right?

If you can get pics up..Thatd be easier for the Members to diagnose
Was there antifreeze in any of the cylinders when you pulled the head off?
White smoke out the exhaust. Loss of power?

all the above. white smoke, bout killed it if i didnt first. had stopped before it happened so not sure bout power loss. but yea all 4 cylinders have water in them. and the rear 4 bolts i polled you could see the water drops sitting on top the oil on them.

antifreeze= water haha. green antifreeze+oil in each cylinder. none under the valve cover, just in the cylinders and all over the ground now. but i didnt take my intake off. just the exaust side so i could tilt it to see if the gasket cracked. was trying to get away from pullin it all apart. do an easy fix. but if nobody can forsure answer that it was indeed the gasket and loose bolts that caused it im gonna have to pull everything

Having the head pressure tested will tell if you have a cracked water jacket somewhere. Of course have the surface checked for warpage. Make sure its a respectable/reputable machine shop.
A good time to drop a cam in, change timing chain (get one with metal guides), depending on the condition of headbolts mignt want to replace them, chase the holes too. I perfer the Toyota headgasket.

mud pig: engine has less that 10,000 on it from sunwest autos. has an lc engineering rv cam. and is bored out. has the metal guides and tensioner. and everything still looks new and in good conditions. which is what has me wondering why it did this.
it still has a 36 month waranty. which 24 months still remain on the engine from valve cover to oil pan.

Have you had/done a head gasket recently? Its odd that all of a sudden the rear two head bolts came loose.
My .02, replace the upper set and have the head checked.

havent done a head gasket at all on it. besides the normal maintenace, i adj. the valves and retourqed everything at 500, 1000, and 5000 miles like they told me to.
but during those 3 times the worst thing i found was 1 exaust valve a lil loose.
never loose bolts or anything until now

Yes, the hub issue is common when water gets in the hub. disassemble lube and reassemble. Easy. Use a lightcoat of grease. New gaskets to seal it.
Welcome to YT, you should post an introduction too.

god da** it. i didnt call sunwest. instead i took it all apart. visually inspected the head and threw a new gasket it.
got it all back together. and got it running. had a lil miss so i messed with the timming. turnint it off. went to turn it back on. nothing. was really hoping it wasnt water logged.
well of coarse, cylinders 1 and 3 dry as a bone while looking at the spark plug. cylinder 2. wet. so i kick it over without the plug. and can you say shower?
2 buddies covered in antifreeze.
so im gonna have to call sunwest.
what would be cuasing it to have water? litterally there were no cracks in the head. and it was a new gasket. tourqed down to the right specs.
any ideas on what to do next? i really need to get this running considering its a DD

Head needs to be magnafluxed to find out if its cracked. And The deck and head should be checked with a stright edge as well.
Hate to think that they hit an inclusion in the block when the bored it out...yikes.
Btw, I am new here and like the forum. Seems like good people.

sounds like you need to get a headgasket clean it all out and put it back together that will tell you if anything is wrong but the sound you heard could of been when water got in the cylinder it could of lifted the head off the block if the bolts werent torqued down enough

havent drained the oil yet to see if it mixed all the way. i have work so it will be tommorows job.
but with a new head gasket and it still doin it.... what else would it be besides a cracked head?
was dry the whole time we were messn with timing after renewin all fluids and a new head gasket. it wasnt until it started running and warmed up that it was missin on one cylinder and had antifreeze in the exhaust. and shot water out the plug hole
