t_boneshacone's 1985 Pickup Build-Up Thread

Well i have been weighing my options for a lift to lift up my front i blocked and shackle lifted the back, and left my front sagging(bad).

well i started looking for some suspension lifts and they were all out of my budget, bought the truck for 375, and i dont feel like spending that on a lift lol, so i took on a project to make my own lift.

Everybody has heard of chevy swap right, RIGHT? well probably not like i did it. My chevy swap consisted of taking all the springs but the first one in a chevy pack and swapping those three out for the two bottom springs in my pack.

Well if you think it wouldnt work you guessed WRONG, it lifted my front up and 4 or to 4.5 inches, i have close to 10 inches of up travel with 33/ 12.50s.

I have got to say that for the $25 i spent for the chevy springs that this is by far the best and cheapest way to lift a vehicle, its even cheaper than a RUF swap, and its not even as much work.

Let me explain how i did this a little better, i started off by buying a set of chevy springs for $25 from a good friend, and then i went to work taking my spring pack off of my truck but i left the axle under it just jacked up the frame enough. then i took some measurements and cut down the chevy springs to fit in my pack and got some big C clamps and made the toyota springs fit the arch of the chevy springs, then put my pack back together and voila, i only have 5 leafs in my pack so its not too stiff, but its stiffer than a RUF but considering how much easier it is, its DEF worth it.

well i am super excited to have done this especially for only $25, i will have some pics up soon.

to tell you how much it lifted it, i have to get a new pitman arm or adjustable drag link not sure which, and i have to get some longer front shocks, it sits pretty good right now.

well thanks for reading COMMENTs, and Criticism is welcome,

t_boneshacone

I'm slightly confused here...

So you used 63" chevy springs mixed with toy springs?
Could you explain in a little more what are the springs in order?
such as this:
1. toyota main
2. chevy 2nd

etc.?

Why don't you take the u-bolts and flip them so the round end is under the axle and put one on each side ot the springs. Then, take the plate and put it on top of the springs so the threaded ends are up out of harms way. That would be the same as a flip kit.

here is how they are mixed in

1. toyota main spring
2. toyota 2nd spring
3. chevy 2nd spring
4. chevy 3rd spring
5. chevy overload, so its kinda stiff lol

and i am thinking about doing that flip, but i have a spring perch on the bottom of my axle so idk if it will fit just right, and on the other side my pitman arm wont clear the u-bolts anyways

well i got to thinking, and i am gonna take out that overload so it will be softer, with that overload its gonna be tooOOOO stiff lol, but since my dad and my retarded friend was helping they thought it would work with it, just as good as using the stock bottom leaves so i am rebuilding the pack again and this is how its gonna be

1.stock toyota 1st leaf
2. stock toyota 2nd leaf
3. chevy 2nd leaf cut down
4. chevy 3rd leaf down
5. stock toyota 3rd leaf ( i may leave this one out idk yet)
6. stock toyota 4th leaf ( i may leave this one out too idk yet)

yea its just plain ol toy rears that have blocks under them (BLECH) i plan on doing the more heard of chevy swap back there sooner or later, and stagger you think when i redo the pack it will be better without 5 and 6, because the only reason i MIGHT put them back is to gain the height i will lose from the overload i had on there

while i am at it, how hard would( http://www.4wheelparts.com/Drivetrai..._pn=G/G85-2041 ) <that be to install

and how decent would yall think this winch would be http://www.4wheelparts.com/Winches-W..._pn=S%2fB97281 (its a smittybuilt but be honest with me, is it worth the money.

looks real nice you could set those ubolts up better tho theyre not done right. flip em over so the curve hugs the axle youl get better clearance and stronger
