85 Toy Pickup resto on a budget...pics inside!!
I bought this from a yotatech member almost a year ago and it's been a great little truck. The PO was a nice guy and the vehicle arrived in the same condition as he said.
Over the last 8 months I have been SLOWLY compiling parts for it via forums, local boneyards and even fleabay. It is starting to come together. I had a week of vacation that I took and I decided to get her ready for paint. It's currently about 99% ready. Just have to finish blocking the pass. side and she'll be getting freash coats of Vodoo Blue/dark blue (haven't decided) tomorrow. Like I said this resto is on a budget. It's not going to get a $5000 paint job in a high tech paint booth. This is going to get the sweeped/wet floor treatment with an extra coat of clear so I can cut all the dirt out. I'll let you know tomorrow with the pics what color I decided on.

Here's a link to the hood I repaired for the truck. http://forum.ih8mud.com/paint-body/4...per-101-a.html
Like I said I'm doing this on a budget. I'm hoping with all the parts and materials I've gathered this will cost under $800. May seem like alot, but once you start buying primers, paints, sandpaper, etc. etc. it satarts to add up. Of course my labor is 100% FREE!!!!

I saw where u said "it arrived". Did u have it shipped if so I would like to know how the transaction went. I'm thinking of buying a 4runner but it will have to be shipped and I'm a bit leary. If u had it shipped any info would be appreciated

I've had at least a dozen vehicles shipped from all over the country. Never had a problem with the shipping, but did get some surprises that the previous owners neglected to tell me about (not including you Mike. you were probably the most honest). I would suggest having a board member go over and look at it for you. I've done that in the past with good results.

Well, I got it painted today. Here's some pics. It turned out good with only a couple of runs which should sand out easily. I went with the Vodoo Blue, but definitely need to put some black on it. I'm thinking on using some flat black on the hood and the lower sides of the truck. It should break it up some. Also going to paint the rims black.

Devilbiss HVLP's for primer/paint/clear. The paint was PPG Deltron 2000 vodoo blue aka "smurf blue". I used Montana Big Sky epoxy with Montana Big Sky 2K high build primer. The clear was Matrix. Turned out good. I still have to paint the hood. I painted it with a darker blue, but had a couple of runs which I knew wouldn't wet sand out. Since I knew I'd have to reshoot it I decided with the Vodoo Blue. Keeping it in the family so to speak. I am definitely going to add some flat black to break it up.

Here's some pics of the hood I did. I don't have any pics of the darker blue I used. I'll try and get some if I remember this weekend. The #'s written on the hood were because it was a cash for clunkers vehicle. It was also a turbo 4cyl toy. It's gone now.

My dad got the stripepainted on. He likes the SEM flat black kit. It looks good. It definitely breaks up the blue. The hood is done as well. I'll get some pics of that next week. Gotta do the timing chain and put her back together. I'm probably going to use herculiner on the inner bed. Don't feel like shelling out the coin for a rhinolining job.

I got the Vodoo Blue from a guy on ih8mud. It would cost you over $350 a gallon, but I got it for $125 shipped. It was PPG's Deltron line which is really good paint. I had urethane reducer, but that would be $20-$30 for a gallon if you had to buy. The epoxy was $130 after shipping, but you get 2 gallons which is plenty. The high build primer was $85 for a gallon and that comes with a qrt of harner. The clear was BASF R-M series which is about $200 a gallon. You do the math.
My father has a small bodyshop he's owned for 37+ years. Sheets upon sheets of sandpaper/grinding discs/body filler/welders etc. etc. etc. were free . If you don't have these items a mild resto like this could easily cost you $1000. I say it cost me around $400 to do the paintjob. The clear was free which helped out. I do have alot of paint and primer left which is good. I have a LEER cap I'm going to paint to match the body in the upcoming weeks.
After getting it on the road I'm going to start phase two which will involve gathering all the parts to do RUF and Chevies in the rear. I've read and re-read posts regarding this setup, but it's usually the little things that will leave me stranded. I will have ALOT of questions for the experts. So plese leave the to a minimal. Most of my experience involving lifting a truck consisted of a bolt on kit. I am a good welder, but this will be my first time tackling something like this.

Cool, Ive been looking around to get an idea of the cost. I was quoted around $400 for a gallon of paint/clear/& reducer from a local shop. Not looking for anything fancy, its Dupont Nason brand, which is what we used at the school shop. I took two years of collision repair and am sure my teacher could loan me the tools/sanpaper/& paintbooth which will save me a lil $$.
And as for phase two: don't worry about it, you'll find plenty of yotatechers eager to lend you a hand
