YotaTheKid's 1982 Pickup Build-Up Thread
I got a 1982 DLX, I traded my POS 91 civic for it hahaha what a steal. ok so its totally stock, california truck so i checked and there is NO RUST YA!! so far i've redone all the brakes, fixed a crankcase oil leak, and some other small stuff here and there. since i've been working i've bought rear es9000 shocks and front 4 inch lift springs, so all i need is the rear springs and the front shocks, then the braided brake lines and i can install all of it and be done with my lift. So i was looking on the almighty craigslist and i found a set of 31/10.5/15 goodyear MT/Rs that have 80-85% of the tread left for guess how much..............300 bucks!! these things are $194 each new so i talked to the guy and i'm going tomorrow to pick them up. then when i get paid they are going on my truck, ya! fun stuff. i'll keep everyone updated, my goal is to make it to the rubicon this summer, any suggestions on what i should do to prep my truck for the fun trip? cb, onboard air? anything like that? keep in mind im on a bugdet. ok well later guys

some flexy 3 or 4" springs, high steer, rear locker and bigger tires and gears. I would have held off on the rear shocks till I knew what springs I was gonna end up with. tool kits and a spare birf. practice changing that in the driveway. don't wanna learn on the trail with 20 mad jeepers behind you. and don't run the trail by yourself...

I wouldn't take a clean truck to rubicon but oh well. Id atleast weld the rear end and fix the clearance issues, the stock transfer case crossmember, rocker panels, gas tank, fenders(if you dont trim the bottoms), rear bumper, and box panels all get hung up easily. First mods id do is get rid of the front sway bar, "re-pack" the leaf springs as in pull the packs apart, wire wheel each leaf and give them a nice coat of rust paint, grease up the shackle pins, it will ride and flex better most likely until you get new springs. Check out the knuckles, see if they need rebuilding, pretty much make sure the truck solid mechanically before getting into mods, do all the fluids etc. At stock height id get a set of decent rock sliders too, Trail Gear sells nice ones for cheap.
At stock height id also do this to the stock crossmember:

planning to do it to mine asap.

X2 on what everyone has been saying. At least 33's with full size spare, rear locker, body armor body armor body armor lol oh and body armor lol make sure you have good recovery points as well ie. front and rear bumpers, this will also protect your front and rear ends. Don't go by yourself!! Going with someone with a winch would be a big plus.
