humboldthilux's Sleeping beast 1978 hilux build
So last year my buddy told me where to get a free truck, so me and a couple truckloads went to try and drive or maybe tow this beast home.
So it was a good start but it needed a hood, passenger door, driver side fender, and a bed.
on the good side, the motor was a crate engine with less than 40k that he put on it, he had it bored out at least .030 over, im pretty sure he said more than that, he said it was alot, it has and rv cam and headers, the weber and K&N i scored off CL for $40
So in an effort to find parts locally i put up an ad on CL and scored this for $250, it wasn't worth the time when the guy went to the dmv and it had over $1000 in back fees.
got the parts truck torn down and ready to scrap, had a perfectly good 20r and 5 peed in it.
Here are some recent pictures of the truck so far.

So, for now, i found out i have to smog it, which means pull out the beefy engine and put the smog-able one in, temporarily (also means i have a reason to pull out the 4 speed), as for the bed, the yellow one is the one i am going to use, the red bed is rusted out.
im debating on lowering it a little or leaving it stock height if i can get some stock old school wheels with the cool chrome dog dish caps(i really like the stock look of these trucks).
If i dont keep it stock im thinking of a carpet kit.
And Westjohns, im in California, but im not selling the yellow bed and the red one is in really poor shape.
thanks for the comments guys ill post more up soon.

Nice!!!
Check General Machine in Arcata for donor parts for the motor and head. They have a stash in the back of 20r goodies!
Sweet truck. I look forward to seeing around!

I have a 76 yota I have to get smogged here in mendocino county, in about a week or so. How did yours do? Just wondering how smogable these trucks are. Nice trucks, if you have any parts you want to get rid of let me know. I'm looking for a parts truck

I actually have not somgged it yet, but I have a smog certificate of 2009 from the previous owner and it passed with flying colors, scored way less than it needed. And as far as parts, what do you need? There ain't much I'm not using from the parts.

Lets see I need 1 hub cap, 2 of the vents on the A/C, door locks, ignition switch, plastic piece that surrounds the steering column, dash if it isn't cracked, seats, 1 window crank and door panels. Mostly small stuff, just trying to save a buck. It occurs to me as I write this list, I got lucky as hell with this truck, I usually need a whole lot more than this when I first start a project.
If you want to let any of that go, let me know, I go to eureka about once every couple of months. There's a couple of early 70s hi-lux trucks around here but there pretty well picked over, either way if your lookin for anything in particular and havin trouble finding it I can check if it's on either of these.
Thanks

I have the door locks, door pannels, ignition that needs a wire soldered, a couple hub caps, top part of steering collum cover, AC vents and window crank, I am looking for either a new grille or the chrome rings that slide in around the headlights

I looked and the front end is gone from one and smashed on the other, but there is a fellow who works at the laytonville auto supply (not napa) who has a toyota rv with the same front end. One of his co-workers (i have not spoken to him) says he would let the wole thing go for a couple hundred bux. I looked at it and its so big I couldn't justify it for just a few parts. I can find out more if you're interested.

Score!
I love the looks of the pre-79 front ends
If you do keep it 2wd they look amazing as low 'n slow mini trucks.
You just need a nice set of vintage wheels to go with it

Your neighbors gotta love you with a jet ski on some some rollers chillin in your front yard lol. I had a broken Down snow mobile in our yard for years. Awesome truck , should be a fun build.
