Need help with 1986 Toyota 4a-c

Car used to fire up every summer. Skipped a summer due to lost key. Next summer, it wouldn't start.

Now, it will run off any gas when you pour in the carb, but thats it. And it has over half a tank of gas. Although, the exhaust it emits from the gas you pour into the carb is deadly.

Any ideas?

Carb? Hmmmm, first things first, eh? Fuel Filter? Fuel Pump? Fuel Delivery relay?(not sure with Carb).

I was thinking about all that. But then there's horribly noxious exhaust smell that is produced during the few seconds it is running. So there's another problem. Even if it would stay running, I'd have that problem.

Question

Well, lets just call the no gas problem the fuel pump.

But does anyone have any ideas as to why the exhaust is so deadly smelling and gaseous when the car runs out of carb-supplied gas?

may be overly rich trying to burn up the gas you're dumping in by hand.

Thanks Vital, that makes sense and I wouldn't have thought of it. I'm working on finding the location of the fuel pump. All the AE86 websites are like down to performace and racing.
