Well it?s finally happened. I have to sell the truck I wanted to keep forever. If I could I would keep it but you may want it for parts.

The Good

This is a 1986 Toyota 4x4 with 229,000 miles and the engine just keeps on kicking. Over the last two years I have replaced the alternator, spark plugs, sparkplug wires, radiator, ignition coil, various brake lines, master cylinder, clutch, transfer case, various fuel lines, and many other parts as they went. I have no doubt that this truck?s engine could make it to 300,000 miles. If I hadn?t been given a car and leaving for grad school in a month I would let it take me there. The truck starts every time, and has been driven all over the northeast. The 4 wheel drive works great and has never left me stuck. The interior is in great shape and shows it when vacuumed and armoralled. You really don?t feel like it is a twenty year old truck when you are sitting in it.

The Bad

Now you may be wondering if I love this truck so much what is wrong with it. Well from what I can tell the transmission is going which I replaced last year. I was forced into buying a 3rd rate transmission hoping it would last but it hasn?t. IF it isn?t the transmission then it is the rear diff. Which ever one is acting up now, from the sounds of it the other will be going soon so they both have to be replaced. I do not advise driving this because whichever one of these is causing the problem makes the trucks rear wheels stop every 10-20 feet making for a jarring experience when you are driving it, so I would recommend towing it. This is the reason I stopped driving it.

I am also selling a replacement transmission. The truck is 500/bo without it or 800/bo with it. The transmission I have is an 88 with 80,000 miles. I will sell the transmission separately for $300 which is what I paid for it.

The reason I am not fixing it is because as I have said I was given another car, am leaving for grad school, do not feel like doing the transmission again, and it needs the passenger side rear leaf spring replace (which I have a pair of, but since I am selling the truck I have not installed them).

Just so you know the rear brakes and emergency brake could use work but the truck stops fine and I just passed inspection at in October.

When I was replacing some fuel lines I cut a two holes in the bed, one over the sending unit and one over the fuel level sensor because when I went to drop the tank I broke a bolt and decided I didn?t want to end up breaking them all, but since there is a bed liner this has never effected the functionality of the truck for me. I also had to lengthen the hole for the shifters when I replaced the tranny so they would fit, but as you can see from the pictures it didn?t affect the interior at all.

The driver?s side rear half shaft is bent but I have been driving it like this for 15,000 miles and it hasn?t affected anything including the tire wear. This happened from an accident? you can see the dent in the passenger side bed. This also caused the rear axle to sit about 1.5 inches to the passenger side as well, but again hasn?t effected a thing, believe it or not the truck still drives straight the alignment is good. The front tires are not the same as the back but a have a pair to match the front with good tread, that I am throwing in.

There is a section on both sides of the bed behind the rear tires that I took a picture of that is rusting through but I patched with aluminum tape. The rear bumper is also pretty rusted, as you can see in the picture. Other than that, the rust in other places seems to just be surface rust not holes or rot, mostly behind the doors. The frame is straight and has no rot.

I have the skid plate for the front and for the fuel tank, but some of the bolts broke when I was working on the truck and I never got around to drilling them out and putting them back on. They also come with the truck.

The radio does not come with the truck.

Again this is still a great truck and it pains me to sell it. I bought it from the original owner who garaged it for 19 years. I finally got it to the point I wanted it, got a cap got it ready to travel cross country to wherever I wonder and this happens, so I hope somebody takes it and fixes it, but again the interior is great, the engine is great, the transfer case has never failed, if you take this truck for parts you will get your money back on it no problem.
