I went through mud tonight on about a 8 degree slope. I slid, alot. I spun in 4LO but eventually got out. Nitto's straight up suck in mud. My buddy had a 2WD 71' Silverado with Hankook Highways and did better than I did. Are Nitoo's the best A?T in Mud??!?! I hope not...

Most A/Ts suck in mud that do well on pavement since that's the compromise and Nittos and BFGs both are so-so in mud along with pretty much the rest.
You need a mud tire for mud but that will compromise pavement handling;it's a desicion on which you really need most and if mud handling is what you need then avoid any AT tire.

Just wanna be able to conquer mud I might find on the trail. This was like slop more than mud. Very slick stuff. I sunk down about 3 inches. I'll see if I can get a picture today. I just don't see how he did better than me.

This is what is really killing my decision between Nitto's and Kumho KL78's for my 285's. I've heard great things about Kumho's and they look more mud built, but I doubt they would last as long as Nitto's. have you guys seen the new sidewalls on the Kumho's? Very very nice.

alright, ill chime in on this convo.... ive had the BFG AT's MT's and now the Nitto Terragrapplers... here are my reviews on them at the moment

BFG All Terrains -

great tire... have the name and the white side wall... but a little slippy in the rain and i assume on any ice. did well offroad for an AT but got caked pretty easy

BFG Mud Terrains -

REALLY great tire, again have the name and the sidewall, slippy as hell in the rain, but unbeatable for a streetable mud tire in my book. great construction, never one flat or lost bead, even below 18lbs in the tire. punished them at tellico for two straight days, drove 600 miles back without issue.

Nitto Terragrapplers -

amazing road quality tire, real smooth at speeds up to 99mph ( not that ive ever gone that fast on a public highway ) offroad, seems to do quite well compared with the BFG's. give GREAT grip in the rain and offroad mold nicely to the rocks. i dont mind spending more money for a better tire, but when it comes down to it, IMHO the Nitto is a better tire all around than the BFG. if you look around town i think you will notice what i have noticed, all the trucks that once sported BFG all terrains are slowly but surely switching to the terragrapplers, there has to be a reason for that!

That seems like really wet mud. I was in slop mud . Maybe because I was going up the 8 degree slope and turning slightly?

Well, all I know is that my gummed up almost immediately. And I had no traction whatsoever. No dig-in.

im sure mine were gummed up as well... and i might not have had traction, but remember these two things. skinny pedal gets you through most stuff, and TG's arent mud tires

just got off the phone with discount tire (i too was on the fence b/t bfg's and nittos......it rains a lot here so i decided to go with the nittos) and guess what? ya......big dissapointment. i have 15" rims and they don't make jack for the 15 in a light suv (not the 8ply) in either 31" 10.5 or 33" 10.5 or 9.50 in either. so i have to move up to a 16" rim or 17" rim first if i want them. Lame.

Yeah, that's the downside with Nittos is no 15"ers but they are a johnny-come-lately to the party and 15" wheels aren't too common on alot of today's trucks.

I got through about 50 feet of this after 5 attemps and smoothed it out with my undercarriage. There are much better tires for snow on the trails tho'.

Yea. I think I'm gonna give the Kumho's a try. I just measured, after 8,000 miles, I have lost 3/32's.

would a 265/75/16 size terra grapplers fit a '01 with the smaller springs better then the BFG's? just curious since the nitto's look to have maybe a less aggressive pattern.

The Nitto's are 31.56" in diameter and the BFG's are 31.7". You do the math.

Man- I started this thread back in May- and I finally made a decision. I went with the Michelin LTX AT2s. I was a little worried about getting the Nittos because there is only one place around my work that sells them and they don't keep them in stock. I was prepared to buy the BFGs (which were on the truck), but when I got to the tire store, they were out of stock. So, making the decision that this truck doesn't necessarily need the 8 ply BFGs, i went with the AT2s. They were cheaper (i got them for $137/tire, while the best i could do on the BFGs was $160). They are quieter on the road, I have regained some throttle response, and they don't have the vibration that i could never quite get rid of on the BFGs.

The Michelins have all the aggresiveness that this truck needs. With the little amount of snow that Delaware sees anymore, this truck will be able to get where ever it needs to go.

Thanks for all the input- I'm glad that i started a thread that has continued to garner attention on this awesome forum!

Bad news in question. I have 12/32's left. I started with 15.5 8,000 miles ago. Load Range D? This wear seems a little quick don't it?

I used a penny to check mine just now and with 27k on mine I have tread up to the middle of the year stamp and I have load range D usually set to 35psi.

They still are performing in the snow well and I figure I should see another 15-20k out of them which is right on target with a few others have been reporting before they replace them.

With the penny trick, mine is about just barely above the edge of his chin...if the penny is right side up.

Yeah, that seems to be wearing quicker than it should. I know they wear quicker than BFGs but that's the cost of better dry grip and getting at least 40k out of a set of TGs is reasonable.
