Thinking about swapping

I've got a 98 SR5 that I have been debating an engine swap. One will def get done if I get deployed again.

I looked at the 1UZ for a long time but then started looking at the LS1. I'll list some ideas and thoughts for each one.

LS1:
All aluminium.
Lots of parts available.
Shouldn't be hard to find a donor car.
305/360 out of the box.
Good gas milage.
Just a hell of a good engine

1UZ:
TOYOTA
LS400 donors aren't that hard to find but harder than a Camaro/TA and lots
more miles
Never came with a manual trans
Hell of a good engine

My main thing is using a manual transmision. The bell housing adaptor for using an 1UZ is 1500 alone plus shipping to the states. I can get one to mate my 5 speed toyota tranny for 500, or I was thinking about using a stouter domestic tranny. I would love to get a donor with a T56 but I am worried that the tranny will be too long. But then I would just have to get either a domestic transfer case with will mate up to the tranny or change the trail shaft I am sure on the tranny and use the stock tranfer case. I haven't figured that one out yet. I would love to have the 6 speed though. Hella good mileage. Also with using a tranny engine combo that were ment for each other I can get a flywheel and clutch stuff anywhere.

I've also been toying with dropping the compression so I can run 87 oct. I don't know about that though. That adds a little more expense to something that's being done without hopefully a lot of extra expense. I'm also wanting just a stock LS1 so I hopefully am not killing the differntials and stuff.

I'm just thinking out loud here. Let me know what you think.

Well after some looking it doesn't seem like anyone has put a transfer case on a T56. I didn't think it would be that hard. Just get a tail shaft made to go with whatever transfer case you want. I guess not.

I'm still jonesing for a 6 speed. This goes back to getting something made but putting a 6 speed and transfer case out of a Tacoma/FJ in it. I want to make sure I am not going to kill the tranny with the LS1. Would the stock R150 take that?

I'm thinking now about using an NV4500 with the granny low 1st plus it would still get me better highway mileage. I figured is with 4.56 gears and the .75 5th gear I'd still be just about 2200-2300 RPMs or so probably better milage still plus all that power.

Now I am trying to find out about what cam to use and also what I need to do so I can run 87 octane. Someone point me in the right direction?

In my area, in the rare case that an LS1 goes up for sale, they want $3500 for it. At any time there are a dozen whole LS400's on Craigslist for $500 - $1000.

The T56 case isn't too terribly long, but the shifter is on the tailshaft housing. I can't imagine how anyone could make a transfer case adapter for that. If they did, it would put the shifter very far back in the cab. The NV4500 is a very large transmission. It'd probably take floor pan mods to make it fit, or a body lift at the very least.

2300 RPM at cruising speed is high for a GM V8. My LS1 Corvette turns about 1200RPM at 70MPH in 6th gear. That's the benefit of fuel injection. You can really gear it down and squeeze out some gas mileage.

When gas prices were at the peak last year, I ran 89 octane my LS1 with no problem. It was sluggish on heavy throttle because the ECM was dialing back the spark advance, but it worked fine for commuting. Changing the compression ration couldn't possibly be worth saving 10-20 cents per gallon.

I was looking and LS1's aren't that bad. I should be able to get an entire donor car for 3500 or less and then sell the extra out of it.

I was looking and I know the 4500 if large and heavy but I could run a PTO winch off of it. I think that'd be pretty cool. Also, would the R150 tranny take 350 lb/ft? I know the NV will plus have room to spare.

Now the cruising speed, I know the T56 would be bad ass to use but it would be a challange. I haven't found anyone having done it.
