Think I got in over my head: 3.4 swap help needed

I got in WAY over my head trying to do this swap. Everyone talks about how easy it is, but I disagree. I paid the 15 bucks to get on the TIS site to look at wiring diagrams. None of it makes sense to me. I am getting very frustrated and am ready to sell the whole setup. If there is someone in the SLC area that has done this swap, please chime in. I am in serious need of some help

I am gonna out on a limb and think he is referring to a 3.4 swap because this is the 3.4 swap folder.

to the OP: in the future make your thread titles relevant to the subject you are posting about...your title could lead to it being deleted.

Sorry about the title. I don't know how to edit it or I would. I am just really pissed off about the whole thing and getting frustrated and wanted to make it quick. But yes I am referring to the 3.4 swap.

the easiest part is getting it installed... is it the wiring diagrams that are scary?

Yes. I feel like I just wasted 15$ on the TIS because I don't understand them AT ALL. If I had the money to have ORS do a harness for me I would be all for it, but unfortunately I don't.

Unfortunately ORS fell victim to the economy @ the end of 2008

I have had a couple threads axed for not having a descriptive title or first post.. just helpin' out.

don't get discouraged, it is not easy, its just the easiest. Im more then sure you will be able to figure it out.. just take you time and stay level headed.. if you need help, your in the right place..

have a beer and hit it when your fresh.. try to simplify the wire diagram by over looking most of the un-used parts.. literally try to block any other part out. and do one thing at a time, try not to do a whole section at once. example: when doing the dash, dont worry about anything other then the speedo, when it is complete, then move on to the CEL. etc. etc.

this might make it take a wile but your focusing on allot smaller task..

good luck man!! dont get angry and throw away all your hard work..

why dont you post what you HAVE done and what you still need to do and I think that many guys here will help you out.

The wiring is a bear, but certainly not all that difficult. You just have to sift through the unneeded and focus on what you need to accomplish.

What years are we talking about? Auto to auto or manual to manual?

Give us some background, maybe we can collectively add to your knowledge level.

this is something that dntsdad came up and it helped me visualize the whole process of finding the connections. I clarified the process a little bit better.

also note that this is not a night and day swap. be ready for some down time unless you have a bunch of time to put into your truck on a daily affair.

i'm currently doing the wiring part of the swap....

Ok everyone thanks for the encouraging words. I chilled out for a little and started fresh and figured some things out. I got the +B, batt, stop light switch, A/C, and I think speedo figured out. I still need to repin the tach, MIL, oil pressure, temp gauge, and wiring in the OBDII. But Im having a harder time with those. My rig is a 95 4runner and the donor was a 98 Taco. Harness and ECU were both from it, and they are both manual trans.

Well, you've got half the battle figured out.

Wiring was my biggest concern, but when I realized the goal was to find the functions in the underdash harness and then cross reference them to the engine harness, it wasn't so bad.

Most of the stuff is handled by the wiring harness on the engine. All you're trying to do is get power, ground, and a few other functions working.

You'll be fine.

Side note...did you switch the oil pressure sending unit from your 3.0 to your 3.4 yet? Do not use the 3.4 oil pressure sending unit, as it will fry your oil pressure gauge.

Made some real progress today (in my mind) I got most of what I think needs to be done with the wiring figured out. I mapped everything out on paper so that I could understand it and cross reference them with eachother. Hoping its all right. Thanks again everyone, Ill keep updates coming.
