3.4 swap into 1990 P/U - ECU/Tranny question

I recently SAS'd my toyota and now im going to do an engine swap. Ill be swapping out the 3.slow for a 5vz out of a 96' tacoma that i bought rolled. My question is that the tacoma had an automatic tranny but i want to use the R150F in the other truck. Im sure i will have to track down an ECU of the same year as the 5vz.. but will this work with the older R150F?

I don't think so, as I believe the newer tranny has more sensors.

Now, that said, someone with more 3.4 knowledge about the auto tranny in this swap might chime in. I think the T100 auto works better with older trucks.

Anyone care to share on this topic?

so your's is a 5spd correct? if so should work. You'll need an ecu and main engine wire harness for the 3.4 that was made for a 4x4 5spd. As for auto to auto not sure how different thats gonna be should be fairly similar. You should download the ewd's for both rigs right away and start lookin over them.

A few guys have made that work. Though I have not done it myself so sorry I can't help you with that one.

Thanks for the reply guys. I do plan on using a 5 spd with the 3.4.. Personally i dont care too much for automatics. I was wondering if i could use the 5 spd in my 90' but if not thats ok. Just lookin to save some money in the whole process.

So my next question is will a newer tacoma R150F bolt up to my transfer case? id imagine it would.. just verifying tho

no it wont. You'll need an adapter to use your transfer case with that tranny.

I guess I'm missing something here. He says he's going to use the 5 speed. The inchworm is for 2 to 4 conversion of autos, right? Why won't the 3.4 bolt into the 1990 directly?

Yea your 3.0 5 speed will bolt up to a 3.4 auto or not. The motor im building was from a 2002 auto and yes there was a hole for pilot bearing. You are on the right track. U will have to source a ecu and prob a matching engine harness. Im gonna convert my auto harness but i got lucky and they used the same plugs in the auto and the manual. Good luck to ya.

Whoops that is my bad. I read this wrong. So please ignore my post about the inchworm site. 667.tech is correct they both will bolt up the only problem you may face is the pilot bearing some engines are missing that otherwise they work for either transmission.

Alright awesome. Thanks guys. Srry for my lack of intellect here.. im sorta new to toyotas lol

Found an ECU on ebay for 89 bucks.. Its outta the same year tacoma for a M/T 4x4 which is exactly what im needing. Next step i suppose is to get the right harness. I have the one outta my tacoma but its for an auto as well... I guess wen my ECU gets here i can check if the plugs match up. Then cross reference the auto harness to the manual one. Otherwise im going to have to find a different harness... ORS is way expensive but worth the trouble i suppose. In the mean time im gunna look around for an OEM manual 4x4 harness tho

i was in the same boat several months ago... I ended up buying an ECU from a junk yard and then a new engine wiring harness from the dealer... However, i was one of the last people to get an ORS kit

Oh.. i didnt kno that. Well that leaves me with one less option i suppose lol. Im pretty confident i can get this figured out though.

Got the motor pulled out of the tacoma today... definitely different than pulling a small block out of a full size chevy lol. I unplugged the harness from the ECU and kept all the plugs on the motor in place. Might help wen cross referencing circuitry i guess. Came right out tho.

Should be gettin the new ECU in the mail in the next couple days. Till then ill work on cleaning up the engine and source out the right harness.

you can use the auto ecu and harness but you have to trick the ecu into thiknking its in N. talk to Vital22 or 904_4runner. i had to buy the new harness because the ORS kit i got was built for the ecu i had..... so i had to have the wiring harness to match

This is too much work. Just drop a small block chevy in there. No fuel injection to screw with.

Once you start reading the ewd's everything will start to make sense as to what goes where and what you need to do to make it work.

Iv got a few i could post. Basically just the engine getting pulled and such.. iv been making sure to take plenty of photos of the whole process. I dont plan to actually do the swap until i have a week off from work.. but thatll give me sufficient time to get everything needed and a good game plan drawn out. Probably somewhere around late december id imagine.

Definitely going to keep it toyota. Not sayin i dont love chevrolet. But besides that i dont wanna tear the hell outta my axles from all the extra torque. Unless i went to Dana 44s i dont think i wanna do that personally. I think the 3.4 swap is worth the extra effort myself... just my opinion tho

From what I hear the Toyota axles are actually stornger then the Dana 44. But I know what you mean. You would never catch a Chevy engine under one of my hoods.

Ok, so iv got all the EWDs for both trucks now. Looking them over carefully.. looks pretty intimidating at first. Its starting to make sense little by little now tho.

I might be getting laid off from work shortly... so i might have to put the swap on the back burner for a while until i get things sorted out. Hopefully that doesnt happen...

I stand corrected. I deciphered the VIN for the tacoma and it is in fact a 1995.5 not a 1996. But thats ok... iv already downloaded the EWDs for that year anyways. The manual that came with the truck says 1996 on it.. but the VIN never lies. So im off to find another ECU lol. So far iv found alot more stuff pertaining to the 1995.5 year.. things are looking up
