Aviator, how advanced is your timing?

I went on a road trip yesterday. Got awesome mileage heading north towards Alamagordo N.M. When I turned towards White Sands I hit an incredible head wind. There are mountains just west of White Sands and its like a wind tunner. Well I watched my gas gauge drop from just under the full mark to just above the 3/4 mark in about 30 miles.

On the way home I had a head wind but it was at an angle to the truck (about 30 degrees) and as I got closer to home it was more crosswinds. Trip total 233 miles and I am dead on half a tank. I guesstimate that is 22 MPG judging that is about where I fill up with 10 gallons. Obviously without all the wind the mileage would have been better.

Well to add, if my engine keeps chuging a long I'll be able to tell you what a new 3.0 L gets. I know it'll be low for the first little while, then it'll go back up.

I have a '95 3.0 with the 5-speed, K&N Filter, Cat-back Exhaust, with 31' tires and I get 17-20 MPG mix HWY and City. I'm also geared for the 235's. So I probably get better than I think.
And yes I drive like an old grampa on a sunday afternoon. Never get the RPM's above 3,000.

A quick update. I used half a tank on that trip and the following quarter of a tank with strictly city driving. I average 20.4 MPG on my fillup today. I am sure I can get 23 now as long as I don't have those headwinds to contend with.

I have a '95 with a 5 peed manual, K&N filter, 31s and 4.56 gears, and I get about 300 to 310 miles per tank mixed city and hiway. I used to get about 240 to 260 until I stopped trying to keep up with the rest of traffic and accepted the fact that the runner was slower almost every other car on the road. Besides I didn't buy it to go fast, I bought it to go places others couldn't.

I averaged 18.7 on my last fillup and that is about 60% city and 40% highway.

Try changing the fuel filter and pvc valve

Try changing the fuel filter and pvc valve.

I recently did this for the first time on my 1997 4 Runner and I noticed that my highway mileage improved noticable.

I just recorded my first 20mpg tank!!!!! wow!!

91 4x4, 3" susp., 32x11.50 tires. 3.0ltr and 5spd. My canopy might help, I don't know. Weight vs aerodynamics.... I'm rebuilding the front end, so hopefully when that is all done I'll be doing better. And.... I tend to drive like a race car driver. I guess my brain still isn't making the transition from sports car to lifted truck.

I average about 15 no matter how I drive/weather conditions/gas quality. My lowest a 12.4, my best was 17. I'm in need of a major tune though, hopefully I can improve on those numbers. I have the 3.0L, 5spd, 285k, 2" body lift, 32's, and 4.88s w/locker in the rear.

I've got a 93, 3.0, 5spd. On 31's with the 2" (factory) lift. Tail gate up with no canopy or topper. I avg 17-20 MPG. I drive it fairly nice. with a healthy mix of city/highway about 50/50. It appears as if my MPG is actually decent for my truck, (its just the standard cab, short bed truck) perhaps its a bit lighter then some of the runners or longer trucks.

everything 100% stock (so far )

It sounds like some of you have some luck with a K&N filter mod? what exactly is that?

I'm probably due for a tune up soon so perhaps I can improve my numbers quite a bit!

It sounds like I'm doing something right (doesn't happen too often). 95, 4x4, ExCab, 33" tires, 4.56 gears, no engine/intake mods, manual and 147k miles and I'm getting 19+ MPG. Only topped 20 once, but never dropped below 19. And thats a mix of short trips, long commutes and city.
