First, let me verify that the gate is indeed there and it is closed. Further up the street there is another gate, which happened to be unlocked. Do with that knowledge what you will. But I would not go tresspassing since there is police presence at times. Sorry, I'm probably bummed more than the rest of you, that was the last North County wheeling spot.
Matt- Mikey has a 1st gen his is an 85. I have an 89 (Last year of removable top. Mikey scored as it is hard to find a decent 85....let alone for 4,000.00
With your budget you could easily find a decent 86-89 runner (Stick to the 4cyl 5spd or 6cyl....no 4cyl auto) You could probably find one for 3,000-4,500.00
My friend just bought a killer 86 4cyl 5spd 118,00 with a 3 inch body lift for 3,950.00
I bought my 89 4cyl 5spd with 141,000 and a 4 inch bracket lift for 4,500.00
Of course these years are IFS, but with a set of Doweny 2 inch springs and shackles and a BJ spacer up front with swaybar disconnects and longer shocks all around, and maybe a lunchbox locker in the rear.....you could have a wheelable rig for under 5,000.00
Or you could get a decent 86-89 and do a SAS swap with the extra 4,000.00 loan
I'm nmot sure how expensive the 2nd gen thing is, maybe Marc or Josh can chime in

Start with a solid truck and you can always do a solid axle swap later on if you find yourself doing the hardest trails. IFS will get you 95% of the places solid axle will.
edit for example:
"94 4runner 4x4, 5 spd, v6, power everything, sunroof, all stock, never beaten or offroaded. 128k miles, timing belt done, clutch done, head gaskets done, this truck runs like a champ. Its white with the tan interior, I can email pics. siknic@aol.com or (714)271-4510. Truck is in Socal $5,200 o.b.o. Partial trades for quad or seadoo welcome."
This truck was posted at TTORA and should still be for sale. Check classifieds here, ttora, pirate4x4, etc. and you may find a slightly built rig for a decent price.

Hey Marc, i don't have a Schwinn per say, but your wife said i could borrow one of her barbie bikes. JK. Anyways, saw some pretty sick 4runners today for sale between 4 to 7 grand and have definatly been considering getting one of those. Of course i need the money from my insurance first.

I'd say yes for 90% of espinosa trail. A couple parts i'd say you will definatly have to be strapped. At the waterfall area, good luck unless Matt will winch you up. I'm no expert at this stuff, but thats my opinion on the situation. Wish i could go with ya'll.

I went through the first half in 2wd last time. You would need to stay on the main trail. It gets kinda tough for a locked 2wd. You could go up the fire lookout.

We did the loop and Espinoza Trail. Everything can be done in a locked 2wd except Espinoza.
Corral Canyon is a fun place to wheel. I want to do Gunslinger next time, and maybe Sidewinder.
