I agree there are some awesome 4th gens out there as you mention (I have seen at least one of them in action).

They are Cooper STT LT285/70R17 tires.
I got the chance to drive Demllo's FJ when I was in Cali and I liked the tires. They were pretty smooth on the highway.
I put a set of StopTech big brakes on my 4Runner and needed to step up to 17" wheels to fit them. I put those Cooper's on my truck and I love them. For the very first time my truck does not shake all over the place when driving down the highway.
They do make more road noise then the Toyo A/T tires I had but much less then the egg shaped Goodyears MT/R tires I had before that.
I will test them out off road at the TTORA Take Over event next week.

Hey, they have those in a 265 also.

I was thinking of getting the same Les Schwab Wild Country TXRs I have on my 4Runner for the FJ.
It is even possible a 285 might fit, as the TXRs are an MT tire, but with an AT type of sidewall, in other words, with out the lugs hanging off the sides.
There still is a chance though they they might rub in a 285.
Gadget, what do you know about these SST tires?
My current TXRs I have had on the 4Runner since around 2000 or 2001, and they still look almost brand new.
They wear like iron.

I wonder which would be the all around best tire?
Noise I do not care about.
The TXRs are loud hummers, and I enjoy the loud noise of them.

Will, I would probably stick with the stock size.
Just called Auburns Les Schwab, they have these Coopers.
He said they wear quite well, and are more agressive than the TXRs, you can see that in the pics.
I will have to take a close look at them.
Change is good
I like the agressive pattern on the side of them.
Gives them more of a down to dirt/bizz look than my TXRs.

To run 33s you'll definitely need to lift the front end up a little bit. The rubbing is tollerable but it's less than ideal.

I have had the tires now for a little over 5k and they are still a little loud on the street. I took them off road last weekend in big bear. They seem to do very well! at least on this trip I couldn't tell a differnce between the coopers and the MTR's I run on my other truck!
