Y'know I really like the looks of the ole 1st Generation Trucks. They were the most badass looking things when they hit the market and everyone else started scrambling to make a truck that looked like a Toyota. Give me a 1st Gen Shortbox anytime!!

Ditchpig - to some degree I agree. I also really like the looks of the 2nd gen trucks. A guy posted some pictures of a re-done 2nd gen he did up stock looking and it looked great.

I'm partial to the 2nd gen "Double Cab's" that were sold in Australia and Africa/MiddleEast, like these:
If bed space ever became an issue, get yourself one of these:
Bed X-Tender
They had nice factory options in Australia and Africa. You could get sunroof, pushbutton 4WD, SFA all the way into the late 90's, limited slip, gas or a 2.4L - 2.8L diesel. Another nice thing about the Australian 2nd gen, is the bed kept the external strap hooks, instead of replacing them with a smooth outer surface like 2nd gen american models.
Interesting fact, South Africa produced the 2nd gen "Hilux 4x4" all the way into 1997, and was still manufacturing the 22R. Read about it on this awesome site:
Brians 4x4
Who the hell knows why they never brought this model to the states..
