It is "bad" to turn pretty much anything on and off. One of the hardest things for electrical components is a change in temperature. Lights run at a much higher resistance (they draw a higher amperage) until they have fully heated up to operating temps. More resistance means more stress on the filament. This is why lightbulbs generally burn out when you go to turn them on. It is also "bad" for you to turn your computer on because the components are expanding and contracting everytime you turn them on and off and off. But it has to be done, right?. That being said bulbs are cheap and easy to change. A bulb for one of my 130Ws is only $10 and will last a long time granted that they are mounted securely so that they don't vibrate and that the wiring is done well so that nothing shorts. I flick mine on and off all the time on the road and it doesn't hurt them.

They are good though when out camping and you need to see at night to set up camp.

my rack is set way further back than yours on the topper of a regular cab taco do you think i would still have the same problem with the light reflecting back? and are yours fog or driving up top

Ben
i don't have any glare on my hood, i think if you mount them anywhere behind the center of the cab, you will be ok

I just used my Hella 500s driving (top) and fog (headlight level) this past weekend looking for the Big Bear campsite. Awesome lighting
Everytime I hit reverse to backtrack I was kicking myself for not getting the rear auxiliary lights done :pat:

Well, I have four hella 500 driving on the front of my rack, two 500 fogs on the back of my rack, two hella 4000s on my TJM, and two hella ff75s in my TJM. I'm very happy with it.

If you look on the horizon to the east on a clear night, that glow is probably me.

I would first upgrade all your grounds before upgrading the alternator most of the time it will make a big difference the stock grounding is most of the time inadequte for anything like aux lighting and everything will look dim including your headlights.

I am running a CS130 105 delco alternator. I have had some issues running it only due to a bushing that pushed out causing it to have belt misaligned causing premature bearing wear and then failure. I can fix it just by getting a larger washer for the top bolt so the bushing goes through it instead of the bolt pressing it out of the mount.
I wish I had done the stator upgrade on the denso one to a 90 amp stator from mobiarc probably wouldn't have these issues.

I run a pair of Hella Black Magics on my bumper. The other weekend when I went wheeling with Cabbage and some of the guys at Big Falls I got my wrist slapped by Cabbage for having them on during the DAY when he was in front of me!!! They are that bright! To give you a comparison, if I drive at night with just the Hellas on and I turn on my high beams, I can't even tell the high beams are on. And I LOVE the way they look against my black grill.

I went with hella 500s. Great cheap lighting, and they also give the car a good look.

I like the way those look, I'd mount em in almost the same way too.. are they street legal though? they seem almost too big and bright to be

To be honest, I don't really know. The salesman didn't say anything when I told him what they were for. The manual didn't state anything about the legality of them. Guys at a mechanic/inspection station haven't said anything when I got work done. A month of driving with them and I haven't been told anything by cops.
I don't use them on the road unless I'm alone and/or I feel its necessary, so I'm not sure. They're mostly going to be for better lighting in the snow (Pennsylvania's winter) and snowy nights.

Hella 4000 Eurobeam 100W lamps. Very well built, quite expensive, awesome output. Probably the best mounting system on the market right now. You either need a real bumper or some heavy bracing under the factory bumper like I did.

Running a set of hella 500's as well. Price is not too bad, something like $70 bucks and they light the road up pretty well. I've only had them on for a few weeks now and they've saved me from a big Buck that was crossing the road ahead. Ive driven around town with them on and nobody flashes me back thinking my High beams are on. But it still makes me nervous so I only use it on dark roads.

I want to say it's a 55W bulb, but boy does it ever throw some light! I think they are rated for 7500 feet!
