permatex RTV sealant

i'm using RTV sealant between the rear diff carrier and housing and am unsure how tight to torque the studs. the sealant says to finger tight while it's still wet and then turn 1/4-1/2 turn after one hour. it also mentions that it will be fully dried after 24 hours, but no mention of tightening any further. the torque spec is 18 ft-lbs IIRC, but this is when using a gasket.

1/2 turn beyond finger tight seems pretty weak to me. any thoughts? thanks!

The FSM, as well as showing you where to use it, tells you how it should be used. Basically...You apply it where specified, in the bead size recommended. Then assemble the parts, installing the fasteners to the recommended torque, within the time frame allowable(within 5 minutes). Done.

From the FSM regarding the application of FIPG:
HINT: Avoid applying an excessive amount to the
surface.
• Parts must be assembled within 5 minutes of
application. Otherwise the material must be re–
moved and reapplied.
It doesn't tell you to do what RTV manufacturers tell you to. So I don't do what they say, I do what the FSM says.

Usually...but in this case I don't. Because I use RTV for sealing differentials too. Where the FSM says to use a gasket instead.

Should have replaced the studs with bolts while you were in there...common issue for them to pull out of the housing.
