Find a matching set of gears..
Weld the front (because who really needs to spend money for a gearset that only sees activity 10% of the time it's driven)
Buy some cheap 33's..
Buy some steel and fab up some sliders, and a bumper.

I had always found an excuse to put off doing gears, but Once I did it. Now I think it is the single most impressive modification anyone could do. Gears with a Spool that is.

Depends on what you want to do. I would say if you're doing any crawling to get a locker, sliders, low-profile t-case crossmember, and high clearance rear bumper for $1k. Tires and gears would be the next $2k, then the next $1k might consider front locker and some gears or front bumper and winch.
If you're doing non-rock wheeling then I would go for lockers F/R and a set of mud tires in like a 31" tire since you wouldn't have the gears to run larger. Next $2k would be gears and bigger tires - if you sell the old tires you might be able to get a mild lift too.

Wow lots of good ideas on here. i was thinking i would do BJ spacers and diff drop from 4 crawler find a set of 4.88s out a junkyard or donor vehicle and replace the ball joints and tie rod ends etc.. while im at it. then probably add a set of shocks with what i got left over. Cuz mine are basically non-existent.

the very first thing i would get is a set of nice rock sliders. im not out trying to destroy my vintage trucks body parts for sure.
then maybe a nice skid or bumper.
i would do the protection first. here is why. with the gears and locker you are going to be able to tackle some obstacles that your otherwise stock truck would not, obviously. bigger obstacles comes with bigger drops. bigger slams. bigger dents.
so protect then upgrade capabilities in my opinion.

With the exception of tires, every thing you see in my sig line was about $1000. But I did get the tires at a ridiculously low cost of like $79 per brand new tire. I bought everything used, except for the t-case gears and the sliders. I was in no rush, so I waited around for great deals on used parts. A lot can be done with not much money.
