I know a lot of people were emailing Toyota to demand they bring the Hilux over here, but I couldn't find out if it had actually happened. However, my parents told me they saw a brand spanking new Hilux driving along. So I wondered if they had started selling them here.

I think Hilux is just a name used, but not for the US market. And yes I want a solid axle 2011 Hilux. Is there one?

I don't know about the sold axle but I've seen a couple down here. Of course they all have Mexican plates. I wonder what you have to do to import one.

....Hilux is just the OFFICIAL name of what we call the pickup.
We've been getting the hilux since 1979.
HOWEVER. Due to differences in safety, need, etc etc. We've been getting the milder versions with IFS, non-doublecab, and different style beds.

Ok, my understanding is that the Hilux that is still made and used overseas (and Mexico, evidently) has a turbo diesel. I thought that was the no no that kept them from being imported here. My parents were absolutely sure that the one they saw was both new and had "Hilux" written on the side. I've been schooling them in the finer art of Yota identification.

My original thought was that it might be a test truck like the Mahindra that I see driving around. Some sort of pollution data acquisition.

They do manage to import them occasionally. I have seen three early 90's Hilux's and 2 late 90's Hilux Surfs in the seattle area.

Yes, like i just said, all of the ones out of the states and usually canada have Hilux written on them.. The name never caught on in the states, so they just called it the Pickup.
Yes, in places like australia, they're about 10-15 years behind us. A friend of mine who has a Holden Jackaroo (Isuzu Trooper stateside), told me that up until 95', the hiluxes got solid front axles. And the "95" hiluxes were actually a body style that was only recently made in aus.. So our 95, is more like a 2005 to them.
They also have diesel engines, and whatnot.

Anyways.. The toyota pickup we have here in the states is known as the hilux everywhere else. But we got the stripped down, less 4x4-oriented version that places like australia got. Still the same hilux though, just different front ends and engines..

Ya know just a couple month's ago, there was a '09 double cab Tacoma for sale on craigslist. The guy had paid to have ALL the hilux badges imported and put on his truck. Looked pretty sweet actually...

So your telling me that this is basically a tacoma? Looks different to me.



I know on the older models they were fairly similar, but the new ones seem to have diverged from the tacomas.

I'm talking about trucks that were manufactured by Toyota-Japan, then exported to the rest of the world..
That's a Toyota-Australia truck, a different branch of toyota with different designs, etc etc..
If you check the design ques of pickups/hiluxes from the late 80's and 90's, you'll find that they're usually 90% similar..
However, australia had the option of the double-cab "utes" that we didn't get due to EPA regulations..

The 7th Gen Toyota hilux or "vigo" isn't the same as our toyota tacoma, and has many different things. The hilux has a ladder frame similar to earlier model hiluxes, pickups, and 4runners.. While the tacoma is something else (don't know, don't care)..

I think you're missing my point. I don't care about the body style. I want the diesel engine. That's why the Hilux that my parents saw interested me. I've read about others who tried to import a Toyota with a diesel engine and gave up. But if this one truly was a Hilux and not just a Tacoma with Hilux badges, then I want to know how they got it through.

no hilux in the US although there might be a 2nd gen tacoma owner out there who has modded there front end and added some hilux badging

when toyota first started in the us there were hiluxs but as they found how popular they were and because of emission changes they down graded them to what we have now.
and the only hiluxs when toyota sold them here were 2WD. unfortunatlly
but ya i would love to have a doublecab long bed diesel too.
