I want a safari bar type thing, has anyone put one on a 3rd gen? I see em on Tacoma's all the time.

are you meaning a "prerunner" bar? I'm not sure I know what a safari bar looks like.

EDIT: I just did a search. I've never seen a safari bar on a 4runner. for the price the stores want for those things you might as well get a real bumper.

After seeing these pics, I ponied up and ordered a chrome Smittybuilt Modular brush guard, hopefully I like it. I'm getting tail light guards next week.







Any tips to fill the holes on teh front bumper where I drilled to install the hella driving lights?

TJM looks good, brushguard looks good too but I like my airbags so i went with the brushguards.

a TJM doesn't mean you have no airbags. just that there's no crumple zone so they'll activate with less crash force or shock or whatever they call it than it would with the crumple zone. so if you think about it, it actually makes it safer. haha.

do brushguards really vibrate and make noise like some people say? I am thinking of getting a black manik brush guard for my silver 4runner. They are bolted directly to the frame like most guards, but I wouldn't think they would vibrate. I definitely don't want to spend 500 bucks and realize its annoying while driving at higher speeds. Thanks

I've the manik, I definately don't hear it. It might vibrate a tiny bit, but less then my hood. The 4runner hoods move a bit at highway speed.
I like the look of the manik, but in small accidents they can cause a lot of damage to your vehicle.

I have the WAAG on my Tacoma and no vibrations.
Still, I'd have to suggest that you don't get the grill guard. If you don't get rid of the smaller bars that go in front of the headlight you're in for a pain in the but if one of the corner bulbs go out. I had it happen to me twice before I got sick of it and took them off :pat:

The holes in the ARB fins are for attaching the Hi-lift jacking attachment. I just got my ARB Bull Bar and jacking attachment, you literally bolt the attachment to the bumper and the hi-lift.

I 20th the notion that I wish I just got an ARB at first. I had a SB Bumper Thumper, them drove into a pole in a parking lot crushing the fender and bumper. So I worked it out with the body shop, ordered the ARB and paid the differnece 75$....

So, the moral of the story is get a brush/grille guard. Then when you decide you want to upgrade to an ARB, find something solid and drive into it...about 7-10 mph will do it. <jk> On a serious note, after that experience and seeing how well the stock bumper is made to crumple in low speed impacts, I'll never own another vehicle w/o steele bumpers. It's not worth backing into an obstack-le on the trail and bending your bumpers all up. (which, coincidentally, is what happened to my stock rear bumper)

when i had my waag, it vibrated, even with the additional mounts. im happy with my tjm, just concerned whether or not it will make my rig sag.

Ive read thru this whole thread and having a TJM or ARB bumper is actually lighter than having the bumper and the brush gaurd, so therefore your front end wouldnt sag, am i missing something?? I asked this question in another thread but i forgot which one so i couldnt check if someone had answered it or not, are there strong coils that you can get that dont need a lift for the front if it did begin to sag>?

I've had my brush guard on for two years now and I haven't really noticed any sag. Spec sheet says it weighs 75lbs too. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a WAAG on my 3G (which is now my parent's). I really wish I wouldve went with a ARB or TJM, but w.e. Mine didnt vibrate too much. It did move when I hit bumps, but nothing serious. It did lower my front a little..

If my Taco wasnt a street truck, Id get an ARB Prado bar..

I’ve got the original smitty bumper thumper grill guard from like 1990 when they were solid steel tubes and plates. It bolts to the frame and to the bumper, Its tough, I have hooked up to it to pull people out and have been pulled out by it, not the top tube but the lowers are thick steel plates bolted into the frame. I recently bought the headlight guard add on kit for it, just haven’t taken the time to drill it out and bolt them on! I think in an accident it would help a lot more than not having it at all, I don’t think if a lifted truck hit the top of it the result would be good, it may bend it into the hood but the lower portion of it is freaking solid! I needed it more for the deer problem. I hit a deer in my 89 2wd commuter at 60 dead nuts in the center of the front end, it KILLED my truck, it mashed the bumper, core support, radiator into the fan pushing the H2O pump into the front of the engine, and pulled the front fenders inward putting a nice wrinkle in the inner fenders! I was pissed. I rebuild the front end myself with the exception of the core support, I had a body shop weld that in for me and it turned out OK but still the grill guard would have stopped the deer from doing that much damage in a second! I will eventually buy a real front bumper but not before gears and possibly a real IFS lift instead of the BJ spacers.......... anyway.. I’ve got a grill guard

Funny you should ask. If anyone has (or will get) an ARB, I have Sonoran Steel modified ARB mounting kit (the two frame horne shoes) to account for a 1" body lift. They will be available in late March.
