Bumper Laws in CA
Hi, I live in California and I wanted to remove the front bumper of my 79 pickup. Some people say its illegal and some say its not so please give me your input.
I will have all lights and blinkers mounted and license mounted where the bumper used to be.
IF it is illegal, will a bar of metal mounted to the front (a small custom bumper made of scraps from my roll bar) make it legal again?

i would mob around without bumpers untill you get pulled over by the police. and then tell them you bought your truck used and it didnt come with a bumper. they'll most likely let you go free.

op is referring to California, Ca, I know a rear bumper is not required for commercial vehicles, i drove around with no front bumper for a long time and never had any problems, the only person you are going to hurt is yourself if you crash. the most they can do to you is give you a fix it ticket for 25 bucks, go by the police station and look at a ca vehicle code book (cvc) or search online and try to find the laws.

Well all I know is I wouldnt want to deal with a ticket, be it a fix it ticket or even a felony..
anyway, I dont even have enough time to get my taxes done with all the crap ive got going on..Let alone deal with a ticket.
Anyway.
Nuff said, OP, Find the CVC laws and if its legal to not have bumpers keep a copy of a doc with you so if a black and white wants to try you can show him it...

This thread is over a year old... I only resurrected it to clarify that the vehicle code states that a passenger car is required by law to have front and rear bumpers IF they came equipped and that 4x4 vehicles do NOT fall under the premise of a "passenger vehicle"...
Therefore it's LEGAL to run without front or rear bumpers...
Now wether or not it's smart to do so, or wether or not your insurance will cover you if you take it off is a whole other story...

i've driven around without a bumper on either of my trucks for six years, and have been pulled over for other things, and never gotten a ticket for not having a bumper. either the cops don't know or they don't care.
