Since winter is here, I'd like to carry some tools with me, in case of an emergency or a break-down. I just have basic tools--wrenches, hammer, breaker bar, crowbar, etc. I'm going to order some recovery straps and a small shovel, as well.

I was wondering what you guys use to carry all this stuff in? I was maybe just thinking of a Rubbermaid containers, but I thought I'd check here first before I went and bought one.

Ive got a $20 locking case from Wal Mart that has all my spare parts and tools in it as well as recovery gear. Takes up a lot of room but can be removed in 2sec if need be.

Sometimes a bucket is good. Put a length of chain in the bottom and some tools on top. I actually have a heavy duty platic bin in the back with chain, 4-way, gloves, army shovel...

I have a crafstmen tool box in the back (smaller one) takes up little room, and is easy in and out...

I used to use a Contico brand tote from Costco but the sides proved too brittle for tie downs and they cracked. I then switched to a Contico truck box but that accumulated way to much stuff for DD duty so I now have a Pelican style storm case that is padded with foam to keep it quiet. I will grab you some pictures later.

On a side note, regarding Vice-Grips: Costco has a 4 pack of Crescent brand locking pliers on sale for $20.00...tough to beat that.

I have an older version of one of these stanley boxes. It is just tall enough to fit under the rear cargo cover. I keep a come-along, my tow strap, and an air hose in the large bottom compartment under the two trays. It works well and what is also nice is you can sit or stand on it if you need to.

I use the same as the home depot toolchest as in above post..strapped in with rope. it holds a good bit of stuff

I have a toolbox bolted down in the cargo area that holds big stuff like spare axle shafts, jump pack, come along, tow straps, spare TRE's, a small shovel, pry bar, etc, and I have a large canvas bag that holds all my tools. The toolbox is pretty full though so I stuffed old towels in on top which helps with the rattles and they make great rags when necessary. The bag is nice because it doesn't rattle and bang around as much as a metal toolbox.

I have a rubbermaid container that is ratchet strapped down in the back. Takes up some room, but the piece of mind is nice.

I've got an amo crate with spare parts and fluids, a craftsman tool kit that has its own hard plastic case, and a rubbermaid or some other like that brand tote that i keep everything that isn't in one of those catagories in. There's a bunch of other stuff I keep with me....friends joke about my preparation for the apocalypse, but I don't think I have that much stuff.....

I went ahead and bought a UWS toolbox like the ones on pickup trucks made to go between the wheel wells. I love it but its kind of an expensive way to go.

Okay, this is now my current setup. Went to Lowe's and got the Contico SUV Tuff Box. It's pretty nice, a little narrow but it fits nicely between the wheel wells and isn't too heavy when all filled up.

Here's a pic, most of this stuff is in my rig all the time but I will take it out if i need the space...and definitely once I get my spare mounted back there.

I welded a stud to my tire carrier for my highlift and a 3' crowbar.

In the back, I am building a drawer system out of 3/4" birch plywood. This will have 2 drawers, and a slide on top for an ARB Freezer/Fridge.

Much like the drawer systems that Slee Offroad sells for the 80 series 'Cruisers.

I used a rubbermaid container for the first year - it worked great and was easy to remove when I didn't need it (or simply needed more room). I eventually wanted something more "semi-permanent" that could be used as a sleeping platform so I built a cargo box. Downside is that it does eat up a lot of room. The upside is that I have a similar unit that fits on the folded down back-seats so I have a completely flat cargo area to sleep on when needed.

You are all missing a couple of impotant things. Originally he mentioned winter, you can have all the repair and recovery gear but that won't keep you warm.
I keep 2 fleece pullovers, hoodie, sweatpants, wool socks, a hat and wool gloves not to mention spare belts, hoses, jumper cables, mis. tools, tow strap, wiffle ball and bat, frisbee and a mexican blanket. oh i allmost forgot,
an umbrella and kleenex because my wife makes me. all keeped in a rubbermaid. in spring summer and fall i replace winter clothes with my mountain bike gear.
