this is covered a ton on here, but ill help you out

1- i dont kno much about carbd trucks, but 2.5in exhaust is pretty big. i would your losing power there to. 2.25in is the biggest you should go on a 4 banger if you ask me. thats what i got.

2- i wouldnt bother regearing it to 4.56. although that is correct for 31s. if you ever plan on going any bigger then a 31, which you probably will, go to 4.88s and be done.

3- they shoudl only be set up by a pro. unless you buy the diffs with gears already installed in it. then there plug and play. your frint diff is 7.5in IFS and rear is 8in. some 4runners came stock with 4.88s, and some p/u's came stock with 4.56s. so you could raid they junkyards and check. most charge $400-500 for them. you can tell the gears by the code in the door jam. i think factory 4.88s in runners are gear code G144. V6 autos with 31s from the factory came with 4.88s. now search my friend!!

4.88s came stock with v6, 94+ SR5 tow package automatics.

but no, really, search man.

If you go with toyota 4.88s you wont be able to regear using the same carrier later on. as the 4.88s are a very unique gear set up via Toyota.

Its all good Birdbrain, We were all new here once.

4:88's would probably be best if you want more acceleration and power.
They are pretty hard to install, if you haven't done it before, you're best bet would be go get someone who has PLENTY of experience working with gears, and pay him a couple hundred bucks to put them in.
A good website to buy them from would be Addictedoffroad.com
They have some good deals on gears and all kinds of stuff.
But i would day 4:88's would be more than enough for 31x10.50.
5.29's are for 36's, and i would say that thats way to much for you, but thats just my opinion, i dont know a whole lot about gearing.
Good luck!

I have stock 4:10's and 31's, and I'd always had a problem with hills. It had plenty of get up around town, but on hills? AHHHHH! I would slap the dash, shouting, "C'monnnnnnnnnnn girl! Let's go, we're doing 45mph on the 5-Grapevine, ....LET'S GO!".. hahaha.

Today, I still have 4:10's with 31x10.50x15's, but I've since swapped out my CAM with a 261 from Engnbldr, LCE Header 4-1 with 2.25" pipes, higher flow cat, borla muffler, cold air intake and mildly modified head, and it's now doing the same hills(mostly cuz of the cam) at 60-65mph! I would like to go to 4:56's, if I find a 'ret-2-go' set laying around, SOME DAY, ...but for now, it has PLENTY of power for me without touching the gears.

Welcome to Yotatech, and don't sweat the razzing... TAKE IT LIKE A MAN AND FIGHT BACK! lol... They'll respect you more, hahaha.

PS> TIMES 2 ON THE EXHAUST...Unless you're running a 300HP LCE motor, there's NO WAY you're gonna get the 'optimum' back pressure with that set up.

PS> Thanks for the # to look for on the door, Yoder... I'ma look into that. I have a bud with a yard that would probably get em to me cheap. I'd never go over 31's with this particular truck, so 4.56's are fine, from everything I've read.

wow, that thread was fun to read so far! lol

Oh, I hear ya.. yeah, I just meant the basics, "Look for it on the door"... I keep forgetting that. Thanks for the reminder! lol I doubt it would be 'likely' to find in his yard, (stuff he's probably thought of, eh? lol)... but worth a shot! lol.

keep things on topic guys, even if this have been covered before

My opinion? The 22r is underpowered to begin with but it is strange to have a hard time with stock sized wheels with stock 4.10's. Usually the truck will do just fine with 4.10's even with 31"s. I ran 31"s on 4.10's for 3 years and it did fine, but obviously didn't have a bunch of "get up and go".

I wouldn't change the gears unless you were going up in tire size, otherwise you're going to constantly be too high in RPMs when cruising, and it's eventually going to hurt the motor...

The way I judge it, stock size tires and up to 31"s, keep the stock 4.10 gears. 33"s, go with 4.56. 35"s, go with 4.88. Any larger, consider 5.29's, or transfer case gearing.

But, I think you might have some motor issues, maybe carb issues, if you're lacking that much power with stock gears on stock sized tires...

yea im with IASB. i was fine with 31s on 4.10s for a daily beater. i mean it wasnt fast, now did it have tons of power, but it never will until you drop 4 grand into that 4banger to gain 68HP or do a motor swap.

so far i have ran 31s on 4.10s- fine
33s on 4.10- sluggish
and now 35s on 4.10s. better than 33s IMO bc it puts you a gear lower.

I have 4.88's with 33's and run 3000 rpm at 65 mph with a manual tranny. You want to run more rpm than that? probably 4.56 for 31's....
