turn my truck off and it just wont die
so i'm worried about posting this, i searched and couldn't find anything but i got a 87 22-r, 5speed and when i go to turn it off i turn the key over and it starts to die and then it like tries to start again or something. when it does this the shift knob like shakes around and then it makes like a screeching type sound before it dies. this is my first truck and i just can figure it out, any help would be greatly appreciated. oh and it doesn't happen every time and it seems like it happens more when the engines hot

On the carburator there is a fuel cut solenoid, what it does is shut the fuel off to the idle circuit when you turn the engine off. If its bad or the little o-ring on the end of it breaks it will cause the engine to keep running when the engine is shut off. Are you sure the timing is set right ?.

the solenoid will be on the passenger side of the carb. It will have a wire to it, make sure that wire is getting power. If it is not, make sure the wires in the green connector that goes to the carb are connecting properly and not backing out of the connector.

sounds like you have carbon build up causing hot spots and dieseling when you shut it down. the hot spots can be caused by excessive carbon build up or your timing is too far advanced. what happens is the hot spots ignite the fuel being pulled in without a spark and sputters the engine over a few times before it turns all the way off. good luck keep us posted. ps i used to have a 79 with a 22/20r hybrid in it and it did the same thing only when it was hot out and was caused by too much timing, i retarded it a little and it went away, high base timing causes hugh combustion temps heating up carbon build up
