Timing question......
I'm getting a "dieseling" when I shut my truck off sometimes. I am going to do the timing today and would like suggestions where I should set it. I would like it set a little more for performance. It's a 22r motor.

Where are you? I'm up at about 5,000ft, and I set mine to around 8, with the vacuum advance plugged. I think anywhere from 0 to 8 degrees is in the realm (I think the FSM says 0, but my truck would run seriously crappy there). Just see where yours runs best.
Also, deiseling is more likely a carb problem. Possibly anti-deiseling valve (solenoid) on the carb. But I guess it can be caused by a few things.

OK new timing question.
My mark is way off with the distributor maxed out. The mark is +/- @ the 12 o'clock mark. How hard is it to pull the dist. out and turn a tooth or two?
EDIT: In my case, do I need to worry about tdc? I'm not completely removing it.

Did you pull the vacuum line off of the advance on the distributor and plug it?

Find an FSM or even Haynes, it will show you. If you cannot get to 0 or even 5 no matter how far you turn the disty either way, then yeah, you may be off a tooth. It's really easy to pull it. One bolt, the one you've been loosening to time it, and it'll come out. Make sure you're at TDC then pull it. Make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. When you insert it back in it will roll a little to one direction (can't remember which), so you need to insert it pointing a little off where you want it to be once it's in all the way. I think it needs to be pointing to around...10 or eleven. Hopefully somebody who's done it more recently and remembers better will chime in.
With the vacuum advance hooked up, you'll be up around 12 (if it's timed right), with it plugged, it willd drop down to 5 or 6 or so.

Sounds right. Advance would be a higer number, retard lower (which is of course totally different from the vacuum advance raydouble is talking about).
