Newbie Bigger tires with 3.58 gears
Hi all, I may have just made a mistake. I have a 2.7L with (If I reading the codes correctly) 3.58 gearing. I just went up in tire size to a 30". Doing the math, that's a 5% increase over the original 225/75 R15. So far, I haven't really tested it much, but I'm wondering if I'm going to run into trouble down the road. Would it be advisable to switch to something like a 4.10?

If your not going any higher then 30" then yea find some OE 4.10 differentials and throw those in.
My 99 single cab 2.7 5 speed did just fine on 31's and 4.10's
LOL though, you have now been brought in to the-- what was toyota thinking with 3.58 gearing-- club.

Yeah, that's what I figured. What the hell was Toyota thinking with 3.58? I couldn't believe it when I read the sticker.
I figure I don't ever want to go bigger than 31s since I don't want to deal with a lift. But 4.10 would certainly take care of me currently.
Gotta save up for gears and, while I'm at it, a rear locker.
Can't wait till I try driving with 3.58 in the mountains!

My 94' has 3.58's also. My axle code is F372. You should be fine with 30's it will just be a bit weird on the freeway. I have a 22re and i'm in 4th gear at 60mph. 5th gear is almost useless. I will be upgrading to 4.10's when I do rear locker

Alright, before you guys kill each other let me just say this: I posted this in the 95.5 - 2004 4 Runner Tacoma forum and they bumped me here. Ergo, upon posting, I did not feel the need to explain that I had a Taco.
It'll be awhile before I can change out the gears, but I'm going for the 4.10. For now I just have to deal with some power loss. Doesn't seem so bad. Drove it down the highway in 5th at 60mph and it did fine. Of course, that was a flat highway.

I figured out you had a Taco because of the 2.7 and 4runners never had 3.58s, but I recommend making a signature so everybody knows the details on your truck. It'll yield you better responses in general too. PM me if you want my front 4.10 R&P, you can have it for shipping (that is if you live in the lower 48). But I'll warn you, they've been sitting outside in a box wrapped in rags for a year.
