(newbie) 94 to 86 diff swap

I have been lurking here for over a year now and have learned a lot from the very knowledgeable posters.

I have a 86'4Runner with stock 4:10s and I just picked up a junker 94'4runner with 4:88s (code G144).

Can I do a direct diff swap between the trucks? I want to put the 4:10 diffs in the 94' and the 4:88s in the 1986. The 86 is my DD and I plan on selling the 94 after I rebuild the engine.

Thanks, Mike from Tampa

The center section of the diff should be the same, however the long section will have ADD junk on it. I'd just unbolt each long section and swap.

exactly, swap the axle tubes on the front and you should be good to go.

rear diff will be a direct swap

FYI: Rear 3rd member will swap, but not the rear axle. The 94 will be a coil/link setup, the 86 will be leaf. Also, the 94 will be setup for ABS while the 86 wont.

Also, I was talking solely about the front in the previous post, guess i should have clarified.

Thanks a lot for the replies.

Its funny, after looking for a 4Runner with 4:88's for almost a year now. The day after I buy one I found two more at the junk yard today. O-well

OK, so I got the rear diffs switched out and now I have both front diffs sitting in the driveway. How do I swap out the axle tubs from the 94' V6 diff to the 86' 4cyl diff? Do I need to pull off the diff cover and remove a snap ring or something?

Also, is there anything else inside the diff I need to disconnect as far as the ADD is involved.

should just unbolt and out it comes. you'll need to pull the axleshaft first, which can be a bit stubborn. I think I used a slide hammer to get mine out.
