Anyway, I'm thinking of replacing the fuel filter. Where is this located on a first gen? Somebody told me on the frame by the tank? How exactly do I change it?

On my 82 (4x4) it is in the engine compartment, on the passenger side near the cab on the wheel well. I think they should be the same not possitive though. Good luck!

I can help you with this one. My son's truck had the same problem. It would sometimes die while idling. Or, if it idled okay, and you took off down the road, it ran fine until you started going about 40-45, then it was starving for fuel.
He has an '85 4x4 and his fuel filter is just outside the frame, at the front passenger side of the bed.
We had similar fuel problems and changed the filter twice. No help. Fuel filter kept getting gummed up.
We removed the tank and cleaned it out. Then replaced all the rubber fuel lines from the tank to the carb. Filter no longer clogged but it didn't run any better.
Then we replaced the fuel pump. Same story.
Then I changed the float level in the carb and it seemed to clear up at idle. Took off down the road, it was still there.
Finally, I say all this to tell you that there is another fuel filter-IN THE CARB-just past the banjo-type fitting and before the needle and seat. His was gummed up and rusted and would not allow fuel to flow enough to keep up with the demands of 1000 plus rpm. I cleaned it up and re-installed it and it now runs like a new truck. No worries. (except for the bad smoking problem from a worn out engine. Rebuild is in the works)
I know this was long, but I hope this helps out other newbies with fuel starvation problems. BTW, this place is great with excellent help and genuinely friendly and helpful folk. I hope I've contributed to the cause.

Huh. I wouldn't have thought of that. I replaced the filter, it was on the passenger side fender. Its not gummed up after a while of driving, the problem didn't occur either, or at least it wasn't as noticeable. I'm going to check tomorrow, as it'll be 19* in the morning. My grandpa still thinks there is water in the gas.

If it does turn out to be carb problem, I'll let my mechanic take a look at it. The last time I tried to fix a carb problem my riding lawnmower didn't start again until I got a new carb

When my 22R fuel filter went, it trembled a little at idle from time to time, until one day it stalled. It was located on the passenger side frame rail I think behind where the cab ended. Once that was done, problem solved. I don't remember any lack of power issues while driving. Is your cat starting to plug up?
