conventional oil vs High End Oil?

ok i've been wondering this for a long time.

but does anyone use high performance oil?

cause i put conventional oil in mine everytime i do a oil change.

(since oil change my 4runner seems to have a oil leak)

i also have another question

i have a oil leak on the front of my 4runner that has dripped some oil on my IFS. any ideas on what could be causing this?

I rum Amsoil in everything i got even the lawnmower. I got a 97 4runner at 235k. i change the oil every 25k. fixing to do it once a year since im not daily driving it anymore. I send my oil of to be tested so i know its performing as it should. My toyota corolla has 265k on it.
You can run any oil you want to, its up to you but to know whats going on inside your engine and if your oil is doing as advertised get it tested.

I've been using shell rotella T6 5W40 in my 90 22RE for the last 2700 miles and it hasn't leaked or burned a drop. It wasn't doing either of those before thought like dbcx mentioned.

Before that I ran all different kinds of dino oil.
The only difference I have noticed is that it starts easier now with the 5W.
You said that you think it has an oil leak now, from where? Did you change the oil your self or did you take it somewhere? Is it possible that it is leaking from the drain plug or the oil filter?

I use whatever is cheapest. Oil is oil. As long as you change it every so often you'll be fine, or maybe I'm just lucky.

I didnt say anything about burning oil? But my 4runner doesnt use any oil even between 25k oil changes.
here is a good idea of oil thicknesses:
The difference is at 75 F, your startup temperature in the morning.

Oil type... Thickness at 75 F...Thickness at 212 F

Straight 30...... 250......................10
10W-30............100......................10
0W-30..............40 ......................10

Straight 10........30....................... 6

Now you can see that the difference between the desired thickness your engine requires ( = 10 ) is closest to the 0W-30 oil at startup. It is still too thick for normal operation. But it does not have far to go before it warms up and thins to the correct viscosity. Remember that most engine wear occurs at startup when the oil is too thick to lubricate properly. It cannot flow and therefore cannot lubricate. Most of the thick oil at startup actually goes through the bypass valve back to the engine oil sump and not into your engine oil ways. This is especially true when you really step on that gas pedal. You really need more lubrication and you actually get less.

Note that a straight 10 weight oil is also too thick for your engine at startup. It has a thickness of 30. Yet at operating temperatures it is too thin having a thickness of 6. It needs to be around 10. The oil companies have added viscosity index improvers or VI to oils to solve this dilemma. They take a mineral based oil and add VI improvers so that it does not thin as as much when it gets hotter. Now instead of only having a thickness of 6 when hot it has a thickness of 10, just as we need.

The penalty is the startup thickness also goes up to 100. This is better than being up at 250 as a straight 30 weight oil though. Oil with a startup thickness of 100 that becomes the appropriate thickness of 10 when fully warmed up is called a 10W-30 weight motor oil. This is NOT as thick as a straight 30 weight oil at startup and it is NOT as thin as a straight 10 weight oil at full operating temperature.
I have the link to the complete story but it is LONG but it is a good read to undrerstand oils

I run royal purple 5W-30 in my toyota (22RE) and castrol in my 2001 Trooper (which uses ALOT of oil). I change the trooper's oil every 3500 - 5000 miles and i change the toyota's oil in April and October regardless of miles (I maybe do 9,000 miles a year).

I was very impressed with the internal surfaces of my 22RE when I replaced the head gasket last year. It was a re-man engine that had about 30,000 miles on it. Still looked like a fresh rebuild. The cross-hatching on the cylinder walls were still visible.

The trick is to be consistent in which product you use and being consistent on oil change intervals. Other than that its all how much you want to spend.

I used Gastrol GTX for years and now Shell Rotella T. I won't put cheap stuff (like SuperTech) in mine, I don't know if it's really that bad, I just don't feel comfortable with it.

What part of the front end is it leaking on, and which engine is it?

If it is the 3VZE and leaking all over the pass side UCA and the surrounding area I wouldn't be surprised if it's ATF from your power steering pump.

My guess its your oil pump seal, and or the shaft it rides on is grooved from wear.

high end oil?(synthetic) multi viscosity oil will allways b better for engine longevity, the only thing i've ever heard on synthetic is once used you have to stay with it permanently

Amsoil makes a 10w40 for the flat tappet engines,Holds great viscocity, brought the pressure on the gauge on my 4runner way up compaired where it was running with mobil1.
Check out the link and info on the amsoil.

The heavier the oil the more pressure it will show? yes? I see it as lighter oil (start up) means better flow, more cooling etc.

i had a guy that picked up the used oil up at a shop i worked at, tell me the oil was cleaned and separated and packaged under super tech and other cheap oil brands. after some of the stuff i have seen dumped in the used oil tank, they had better clean it real good.

Sounds fishy

SWAMPFOX This sounds like pile of ---- not to say it has not been tried. Some people like to stir it up just to be doing something. A company would not be in business long if this was true somthing like that would be all over net. I worked at a facility where we recycled oil to be burned for heating we had to test every drop of oil for contamination and you would not believe what was found, acid, heavy metals,PCB and more things that just can't be removed

Plenty of used oil in the gulf right now, but I hear the cleanup sucks
