90 3VZE truck starts and dies, wont stay running

Pretty confident in the top end. Using the stick-as-stethascope method, I've narrowed the knock down to the bottom end near the bell housing.
Going to yank the starter and the grommet around the clutch fork and look around in the bell housing. Maybe I'll get lucky and find something loose. I know it's a long shot. It did not knock at all when I ran it by squirting fuel into the intake.
When I bought the truck + rebuilt motor, it came with a copy of the receipt from the rebuild shop. I called the shop before I forked over any cash and asked if the warranty would apply to me as well, they assured me it would provided I had a copy of the receipt. Monday I'll be calling them and we'll see what's up.

I have contacted the shop that rebuilt the engine, too much time had elapsed and the engine was no longer under warranty.
Current plan is to scrap all the 3VZE stuff and swap in a Mercedes diesel, although it may be easier to ditch the current truck and trade it for a 4 cylinder version. I have cash in hand for an OM617.952 in good running condition, in the car would be best, near Salem, OR.

The V6 saga is officially concluded.
Yesterday I purchased a fine running OM617 and today I began dismantling/removing the knocking V6. I'll be ordering the adapter from 4x4 labs shortly.
I'm looking at a lot more work than installing the V6 was, but now I'M SMILING about it. Should have skipped the V6 and went with this diesel from the very beginning.
Anyone want to buy a knocking 3VZE and the other V6 gas support parts, let me know.

Similar issues
Starts on the first crank. Idles beautifully. Revs smoothly.
So much bottom end rod knock it sounds like someone forgot to put bearings in one of the connecting rods.
Not sure what the plan is now. Would love to yank the motor and proceed directly with the Mercedes diesel swap, but money is tight and time is short.
Pretty discouraged right now. First time I have EVER trusted someone else's rebuild, and now I know why. Any ideas?
