4wd issue

so i got an 87 4runner with a 22rte and a340h transmission with the hydraulic transfer case. in normal 2wd the truck drives great no noise or slipping issues, but in 4wd the rear passenger side tire will act as if it is binding on something causing it to slip. when you go to take it out of 4wd the shifter lever is hard to push, and when it does go back into 2wd it make a jerk. (it feels like dropping the clutch in a manual and stalling) Recently i change all the fluids in both diffs, transfer case and transmission. i also have two new cv axles on front. Im thinking that this is a transfer case problem but was hoping to hear from someone with more 4x4 knowledge.

had the exact same problem replaced the front diff, and both CV's, put on manual hubs and when they where unlocked it didnt do it but when i locked em it still was doing it. ended up being the chain was slipping / stretched out i think. someone else hopfully has more info on this

Yea I got manual hubs too and only does it when they're locked. When you say chain slipping you mean the chain inside the transfer case? because my transfer case is hydraulic and has ATF lines that run into it. I know 5 speeds are gear driven.

Did it start doing the binding after you changed the fluids and such?

i believe that the 22ret and 3vze have the same xfer case behind them since the tranny is so simmilar. the transfer case has a chain in it that turns the front shaft and that was overstretched in mine causing it to turn and slip.

yea the v6 and 22rte use the same a340h trans and transfer case. is there anyway to check to see if the chain has stretched or maybe a tooth on on of the gears is missing. honestly idk just throwing out ideas. the problem was there before and after fluid change. after changing fluids the transmission started shifting better and was easier to put into 4wd. the hard transition from 4wd to 2wd and wheel slippage problem have always been there but seem to be getting worse.

I'll bet you have different gear ratios between front and rear differentials.

Dude, how can your problem be transfer case related when you have a diff between it and your wheels?

The TC only does ONE thing and that's to be a PTO to the front diff. Anything after that and it's a diff problem...

Sounds like a common complaint from those that either do not know how diffs work or those that use 4WD on hard surfaces.

Sounds like a common complaint from those that use 4WD on a hard surface and bind the 4WD making taking it out-of and putting it in-to 4WD hard.

Or, b/c it's a POS H case, a flow problem like a diaphragm or gasket has blown making the pressure too high.

well i do understand how a t case works but i do not see how it could be a differential problem if it only does it in 4wd and 2wd. also it does do it on dirt as well just but easier to see on pavement. i could see how different gear ratios front and back could be a problem though. how can check the gear ratio in the front and back to see if they are the same. should i just spin the driveshaft and count the rotations of the wheels? also if it was a diff problem i dont see how when i go to put it back into 2wd it makes loud noise and jerks back into gear. if anything i suspect a misalignment of something or a problem with the t case.
