Yes, you need one. Probably your best best is an aftermaket one from trailgear, etc...

well, it sounds like the cops just want to hassle you. If there is a law that states you need a rear bumper on a truck to be on the road, they probably have you there. You actually got a ticket for this?

Yes, in PA you need a rear bumper. I believe they all came with one, however, I might be wrong as I noticed on my 87 it did have provisions in the bed for a lic plate and light.

P.S. is the vehicle registered in PA? If not, then they should not have pulled you over for that in the first place. Of course some people on here say during Moab people get pulled over all the time not registered in Utah with rigs that don't pass Utah vehicle laws, which I still think that's bogus and they are just taking advantage of vacationers there knowing that they aren't gonna travel back to fight the ticket.

So did you end up getting a ticket over not having a bumper? You said the truck was inspected w/o one. What state is your truck registered in and what state was it inspected in?

To my knowledge all Toyota trucks came with a rear bumper. My 94 2 wheel drive had a chrome bumper where the license plate bolted to the back of the bed.(it also has license plate light provisions in the bed) It had black rubber step pads on the top of it. About 7 years ago a guy noticed my bumper in a store parking lot and said he had been looking for one just like that for years, and didn't want to pay $350 for a new one. He offered me $200 on the spot and i sold it to him, brackets and all. Looks fine with out it and I've never been hassled by the cops for not having one. (knock on wood i never will)

If you got a ticket go to court and just say you didn't know, play stupid. Tell them your truck was inspected with out one and you had no idea lol. (going to court sucks if you're not from the area/state in question, like if you were just passing through the state) If you're not from the area you could always try writing the court a letter asking for leniency.

A Google return i found this link:
http://law.onecle.com/pennsylvania/v...5.036.000.html

So i guess thats a law in that state.. which i had no idea.

Money is tight for everybody these days but If you did get a ticket, depending on any points on license involved and how much the fine is you might want to consult a lawyer.. depending on a lot of things.

i was always under the impression the "bumper" was an option. almost like the modern day "towing package". bassicly, if you didnt plan on towing with your toyota, you didnt bother to pay ex. amount of money at the dealership when you bought the truck.

all toyota's however, did come with a "roll pan" bumper. is this what you mean? your "roll pan" wasnt on?

I rememebr some of these trucks only came with a tube style (kinda like a smitty built but with one tube) Which would explain the need for the rollpan. Now that I think about it. The trucks that came with a step bumper would't need that. On mine, the idiot PO put a newer style step bumper on mine instead of what it originally came with.

Move to Indiana, I removed a bumper off my 87 toy 4x4 when I bought it in 96 sold it 4 years later and still no bumper, I love the look without, not once hassled, drove all points of Indiana and up to New Buffalo MI and Brooklyn Mich for neckcar race's and not hasseled once and to Indy monthly, Bought an 84 and right off I removed the rear bumper & drove it for a year, and now have a 93 and once again 1st thing I did was remove the rear bumper, beds without a factory welded in roll pan or aftermarket roll pans and without a bumper is ugly! not a good look, makes it so much easier to not have to deal with it when working on toy and or having to drop spare & got tired of smacking my head on it...
