17" -> 16" on '05 SR5

Has anyone tried putting 16" wheels on a 4th gen SR5 that has the 17"wheel upgrade option. I'm fairly certain it was just that, a wheel [only] upgrade option.

I'm looking at getting the AR Mojaves, and was hoping someone had tried this (with that wheel would be nice) before I order them and have to return them.

You should be fine, the SR5 has the smaller brakes so it can fit 16's. The sports are the ones that cant fit anything smaller then a 17"

stock spare storage

I crawled under the car tonight and it looks like theres and inch both fore and aft to fit a 33" (285/75R16). I might have to air it down a bit. R0cky and Lance can you provide any incite?

(I've seen it mentioned in a couple of threads but no definites.)

I'm not positive, but I don't think that it will fit unless you do air it down quite a bit. My 275 (32.4") won't fit.

Fitting 285's will always be a tight fit. It will rub period. These tires are LARGE compared to stock.

Average stock tires (depends since not everyone gets the same tires from the mfg):
Diameter - 30.2
Width - 10.2

Your tires are either (BFG AT):
Diameter - 33.0
Width -11.3
or
Diameter - 32.8
Width - 11.4

These #'s are from BFG's website (load D or E). They are BIG. By reviewing these sample numbers you can tell that you are filling quite a bit of your wheelwell. Just the math will show that you're gaining an average of 1.5" on each side. So if you measure the wheelwell it will be obvious that it will be a tighter fit. If this is not the look you're going for, I recommend getting some 275's (those are approximately 31.2").

If you want to keep those tires then you need to give more clearance by doing the following:
* remove mudflaps
* trim bumpers (I believe I have a post somewhere stating exactly where to trim). Front needs to be trimmed at the bottom edge (Cut a big trangle). rear should be fine but might need some areas but I don't remember since I don't have a stock bumper anymore.

Btw, tire inflation will not drastically change the numbers that much. Just make sure it's at around the mid to high 30's. You'll want to play w/ the psi to see what works best for you as this will greatly affect your ride and mpg.

Good luck

Lance, I was refering to fitting the D range BFG AT's 31.8x11.4 in the spare spot. It looks like it should fit but I might have to air down the spare a bit to squeeze it in there. I was wanted to know if anyone had tried this. I'm also dropping to a 16" wheel, so the sidewall would have more give.

My game plan is to have the tire place order the size I want, we'll test mount one and try to stuff it in the spare spot, if it's a no go. Then I'll have them get the lt275/75R16's and give that a shot.

My other thought was to pull out the cage in the spare spot (at least my 2nd gen had one) that's made to hold the wheel and either custom fab a larger one, or get crazy with a hammer to make for room, then reinstall the brace/holder/whatever the heck it's called and give it a shot.

that tire won't fit under the spare. if you do keep it there and completely deflate it, it'll rub the life out of the panhard bar. It will definitely leave a worn mark as I have a perm one on my bar

So I'd say it's not recommended. plus you have the 05 which uses the 7k hitch takes is more restrictive. sorry

lance, are you running 285/75's now? I had 32x11.5's on my second gen the extra width was awesome on the beach, barely had to air down much. That's what I'm going for... also thought the 32" tire (31.7) would look kind of small in the well after the lift. Thoughts?

When I first got 285's I got the matching 285/75/16 MT/R's and had it under there for approximately 6 months. When I removed it, I noticed the wear mark on the panhard bar. That's w/ the tire completely deflated and also w/ the 5k hitch (which does not restrict like the 7k does).

Right after I noticed the wear mark, the spare came right off. I can take a pic of the wear mark to give you an idea of how much it rubbed even though it was flat.

Are you still running the 285's (e.g. 32.8)? or did you drop to 275s (e.g. 31.7 or such)? If still running 285's where's your spare.

How much did wear the bar and for that matter the spare?

the 4runner is not running and has been out of commission since the beginning of the year. (good thing cuz i'm saving big bucks on gas since my daily commute is well into the 80+ miles!!)

the truck still sports 285's btw and the spare used to sit on my rear bumper (w/ tire carrier) but currently sits in the 4runner / garage.

no wear on the tire but the bar has a dull spot as if someone got a 60 grit sand paper and decided to just sand down a good section (I'd say a good 6" in length and atleast 40% of the surface area surrounding it.

I would say "no go" on the 285's undermounted. Even if you remove the hitch I don't think that'll help as it did not help me.

I can take photos but I'll need a reply asap as I won't have the truck for awhile (going into another shop for more stuff).

good luck!

Like I said, even the 275 MTR (32.4") won't fit under there.

Your best bet is to carry it on a roof rack, find someone to build you a bumper, carry it inside the cargo area, or buy a tire carrier that goes into the hitch receiver.

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=61158 <--- I'm carrying mine with that now. I had been carrying it in the cargo area, after having it on the roof for awhile, and thus far the carrier in that thread has been the best setup for me.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty set on the tires, so I'll have to work something out.
