Yakima SST towers and 2nd gen.
any of you guys run with these old Yakima roof rack towers? when i bought my 4Runner, the PO had this rack, of course, in the trunk. i couldn't have it fitted on, i thought they are just broken. later i found out the clips were all wrong. called Yakima, they don't make them anymore. recently, i got all the correct clips, put them on last night. every thing went on ok, till i pull on to the freeway, seems the door seal is not really sealed.
i'm a total nooob on this stuff, my questions are:
where would be the best spot to place these towers, i.e. front, middle, back of the door frame,
how far they should be spreaded out side to side.
how far between the 2 crossbars.
here are the components i have:
4x SST towers,
2x 48" crossbars
2x Y13 clips(front door)
2x Y6 clips(back door)
pictures would be greatly appriciated.

It's a great rack...I use the SST system on my X-cab P.U. and 4Runner.
I don't recall my clips being different on the towers front to rear.
A wider spread of the crossbars is better but varies by the length of what you carry. I think the minimum they recomended was 18".
I use the SST extension kit to widen the spread between the crossbars to carry a canoe, lumber or a Yakima Load Warrior.
I locate my towers to the rear of the door frames on the 4Runner to catch a better load bearing point nearer the pillars and distribute the weight on top.
Wherever you place the towers they will cause some wind noise, although it seems less to the rear.
The trick to fitting the racks is to leave the locks on the crossbar partially locked to adjust the distance of the spread and fit side to side on the towers. Once it's positioned, lock the bar and tighten the clips.
Sorry I don't have any pics.
Regards, Ernesto
