And how can you not love an engine that hauls around a 4000lbs brick-shaped truck and gets 27mpg on the highway (as I have). You can rev the crap out of it all day and it purrs all the way home. A head gasket can be changed in hours. Its hard NOT to love the even.

I know it's really popular to jump all over people when they post threads like this but I have to admit, I haven't exactly had the best of luck with the 22RE either. As a matter of fact, I'll probably be selling the truck this year and getting either a full sized Chevy or more likely a Ford F250. I'll still keep a Toyota for my wife to drive, but I'm ready to go full sized.

And the experiences I've had with the 22RE won't be missed either.

From my experiences the 22R or RE will last wonderfully as long as you don't overheat it. I think it's common for these engines to run for so many trouble free miles that people neglect to change thermostats and clean radiators so they run into a cooling problem. When the thing overheats it warps the head just a bit then you have a blown head gasket. My 2 cents, Eric

Note that the bad guys overseas, terrorists, "technicals", etc, all run older Toyota trucks.... despite much of that use in the hottest mean ambients on the planet. There are no repair shops for hundreds of miles of desert conditions. Just a few "true believers" and a few wrenches.

And they don't run Chevy's or Fords.

I would encourage anyone to get on a Chevy or Ford forum and see some of the "common" problems they endure, you'll run back here crying for your mothers.

That is of course unless its a Ford (Navistar) 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel like mine with over 300,000 mi. with nary even an oil leak.

On that note, if Toyota offered their US trucks with the diesel, I'd be the first to sign on. Screw the 22RE I'd say.

Belonging to many automotive forums, I can say that ALL vehicles have their own issues. There is no such thing as a trouble free vehicle. Some are just better than others in certain areas. It really seems that a lot of the issues come from abuse or neglect.

sure i went through a few problems with my 22re but all where self inflicted by me and my motors not know limits

blew out almost all seals and gaskets cause i swamped it(bad night)

blew the head gasket cause i wanted to get home even though i was redlined the temp gauge (coolant system had air lock)(DONT ASK)

now after $2500 i have a new one and no problems with it cause i take good care of it

the 22re is by far the best motor toyota has ever made, or maybe the 3.4. but my experience is i sunk my engine in a mud puddle and the next day it ran perfectly fine with about 207,000 miles...

You don't have to be so MEAN to the guy! He probably just got a couple of abused trucks...

By the way I'll take my Jeep's 258 over my Toyota engines any day...way more power than my 4Runner, an '86 w/150K miles and not one engine problem, it doesn't use any oil, and it starts on the first turn even after sitting for 3 months. My 4Runner, which has had a lot less abuse, blew a water pump at 30K miles, has had two freeze plugs replaced because they were leaking and it is not even to 80K miles yet....and I baby this truck. I have a 2005 Sequoia that uses a quart every 1500 miles and Toyota thinks this is acceptable.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Toyotas, but they are not without their faults. And sometimes it depends on who is driving them.

You don't have to knock what somebody else likes or has had better outcomes with, just to be what you think is "cool"! All engines have their weak points and from what I have read on this forum it seems to be the headgaskets in Toyotas. In Jeeps it tends to be valve cover seals...

it's a great engine if you can seal it .. head gaskets are a REAL issue with the 20/22 R sieries engines .. I wont build them anymore . and have built more then most of your guys ages !!!

Cast block and alum. head .. W/Graphite gasket @ 68FT.LBS (overtorque) still _______ leaks .. I have tried from 58 to 70 torque .. and seems the same thing over the years .. leaks after minimal milage .. but seems to run fine with the leaks ? any wonder why enginebuilder does so well ?

My next attempt on my own truck will be a MLS head gasket .. 10 years I have ownd my own personal truck , and 3 head gaskets .. I will NO longer use a manufacture Graphite ..... gasket .

Myself, I talked to 2 different local, factory Toyota techs and they did say that head gaskets were a problem with 22re's.
