i had an 86 w/22re 5 spd, never figured out the mileage with it or had the opportunity to off road it. the 93 v6 auto on the other hand, its off road as often as possible, hwy mileage can be 500-600 kms/tank but around town its very thirsty. there is a noticable power difference between the two motors but the manual vs auto makes it closer.

maybe ive been somewhat lucky with the 3vze so far, i find it powerful enough, the plugs are a pita to change! i do have a complete drive train in the garage if this one gives up the ghost so, theoretically, i could rebuild and swap until i die or literally blow one of them up!

not much help with your question, just my .02.

my two cents. i love my 22re. its a 5spd and its got around 100thou miles on it. maybe a little under. ive put in a k&n air filter and a thrush glasspack, and ive got a topper sittin on the bed. for a 4cyl, ive got some pop. yea, im not gonna be climbin any 80degree inclines, but its gets me where i wanna go and if need be i can get there fast. yea, i said fast. lol. as for the ability to work on the engine, im no mechanic, in fact, my know how stops about at the popin the hood part, but im still able to get whereever i want to in the engine and ive got PLENTY of room to do whatever i want. i could move some stuff arond, take some stuff out, and practically put another half an engine in there. i dont know much about the 3.o or the 3.4 other than whats been said on here about it, but it seems to me that the 22re is a-better with gas, b-more reliable, and c-has a strong aftermarket which you can use to increase their power output to the equivalent of the 3.0. now of course if u can get that 3.4 in there then dont stop till ur on the road(or off the road) runnin. but as for the 3.0 i would say stick with the 4cyl 22re.
good luck.
