On my old 22re I had a aftermarket cam that made all sorts noise,even setting the valves at factory specs,then a little lower,then a little lower...... Finally I set them at half of the factory specs and it was signifigantly quieter. I drove the piss out of that truck as a daily driver and wheeler for a couple years like that,and the guy I sold the motor to is still driving it with no problems. Come to think of it,I might have set them just a tiny bit closer than half of what stock is, and I did it hot too.

Reading this, I was thinking of some good old man advice, "focus on what what changed." That can help guide a person toward what may be causing the drama. Glad you got it discovered.

That's not always true though graverobber... I picked up a rod knock when the timing chain was replaced.... 20,000 miles ago... One of these days it will hit the fan and I won't have any other option than to drop a diesel in it.....
