Tranny Cooler Location & Maint
Hey guys, so my buddy gave me a tranny cooler off a chevy 2500 and i want to install it. yesterday lookin where to put it and did a bit of searchs and i dont really have the room to put it behind the grille and i dont wanna put it behind the skid plate just cause if somethin happens to it. So i was lookin more to the back of the runner where some have their spare tires. does that sound like a good place? i will have it suspended by braces so it can get air over & below and hi enough where i could never hit it on a rock. also im gonna change the trans filter, how do i go bout doin that specificly? like ive been told to flush out the old stuff then in a week or so change the filter out and put new stuff in? anyone have any advise. Also the reason why i want to put it so far back to is to get about another 3/4 to 1 quart more of fluid also. thanks guys

if you put it out back or anywhere else where there inst air naturally flowing over it ull need to mount a small fan to pull air through it and make it work properly. that cooler is probably bigger than what you need so ided probly be cheaper to buy a smaller one that will fit behind the grille than it would be to buy the fan and all the plumbing to mount it in the rear

I had the same issue. On the first get Runners with A/C, there really isn't any room behind the grill for any type of tranny cooler of good size without hacking into the grill.
What I ended up doing was put the tranny cooler behind the AC condensors (there are two layers of them on my rig, one large and one that is 1/2 height in front) but in front of the radiator. There is a good 1" gap in there. My thought was that the A/C compressor is not on all the time, so preheating is not a constant situation in that location.
Also, that area is very protected, so, damage to the cooler is minimized, as rocks and such can't get in there.
It seems to have worked fine, wish I had taken before/after temp readings of the trans fluid.
