timing
My vetc label say to be at o degrees for timing. that doesn't seem right. An i think i saw some people on here at 12 or something. what are you guys running on a 4 cylinder 87 carburator. (22r??)

The 12* you're reading is probably for V6...
I used to tune my '89 22R by ear/tach. Adjust the idle speed, then the air/fuel screw to the max RPM, then the timing to the max RPM, then dial the idle speed back down. You may need a little tweak of the air/fuel and timing after that, but probably not.

so you adjust the air/fuel screw untill the rpm rises no more, then adjust the timing untill it doesn't climb. go back and adjust you idle to 700 or so and it should be perfect?? Just for kicks what did your timing end up at??

I never really checked with a timing light. NEVER had any knock/ping so didn't worry about what the number was.

Yes it supposed to be at 0 degrees with the vacuum lines on the distributor disconnected. Set it with a timing light to 0 degrees and your timing will be correct. When you hook your vacuum lines back up the timing should advance to about 12 degrees.
