My understanding is that 91 and earlier are cable, 92-94 are electric, and some say that 95 is cable again, but I don't know that for a fact.

I know for a fact that my '91 Runner has a cable, because it makes a hell of a lot of noise behind the dash when it's cold out.

Not sure about my '92 Pickup, just got it a day ago. I guess the safest bet would be to try and find a gauge cluster from the same year, if possible, and from a 5spd, although I still don't see what difference a tranny would make to a Tach.

should be pretty straight forward from what I gather

1) swap the gauges
2) swap the oil pressure senders
3) if the tach doesn't work right away, run the jumper wire



I've been meaning for the longest time to pull the gauge cluster out and replace the bulbs in it anyway; I guess this is just as good

no to mention, it's costing me less than it would to go full electric aftermarket gauges instead of the manuals I have now

now I just need to find another piller trim peice, cause my stock one is now rittled with holes from the install of these aftermarket gauges

and I don't think I've ever contributed a good write-up to YT, so I might give that a shot when I install them

anyone know how to turn the odometer up, so that I can match it to my current 295 thousand, lol guess I'll have to figure that one out; shouldn't be too hard. I like the fact that I'll have a mileage odometer-trip now too I just noticed that, lol

Hahaha....I was actually looking at that one earlier, but the guy confirmed that after '92 they don't have the mechanical speedo cable anymore.....glad somebody is gonna put it to good use.

Now I just have to find out if they used the electric speedo in '95 and I will have a nice gauge cluster for my truck.

By the way, on a side note, do the electric speedo's show the speed off if you put bigger tires on? I know the mechanical cables do.

about the tire size throwing the speedometer off, I would think so; isn't the speed sencor in the trans, much the same way the cable runs to the trans?

IMO, it looks pretty neato... with the aftermarket guages and everything else in the cab... but those are going out the window when the SR5 cluster goes in, so I'm not sure it'll fit in...

if the new odo has less miles than yours you could hook a drill up and spin it till you get the correct mileage... if not... not sure about your locale but out here in Cali you can file an affadavit with the DMV disclosing the original odo reading and the replacement odo reading (technically out here, you're supposed to do that when replacing the odo anyways).

well the cluster can't be all that hard to take apart

I had to take my standard one apart when I installed the stainless insert, so I have the gist of it anyway

we'll see; depending on how many miles of a difference we're looking at, it might take a WHILE to do the ol drill trick, lol

and setting it to the true milage, I don't believe there would be any legal issues I'm probably wrong, but I'm not gunna sweat it... I've done "worse" things to this truck... cough, cough, no-cat, cough, cough

or just wear it out so the speedo will bounce like all the high milage ones, lol

yeah, maybe going 682 miles per hour could cause a problem?
maybe you'd get a sonic boom from the speedo needle?

I attempted to do this swap in my 89 4Runner last night and ran into all sorts of problems. I disconnected the battery before starting and got the gauges and oil pressure sending unit swapped but I'm having issues. With a half tank of gas it shows full, temp gauge goes straight to red, tach does not register though it appears to be wired for it. The only things that seem to work are the oil pressure gauge, volt meter, and spedo. Please give input.

I have a '90 truck and am looking to do a cluster swap to something with a tach and the only part that I am still a bit shaky on is switching the oil pressure sender. A quick how to on that part would be great.
