Anyone getting this "relay rod" replaced on the recall should insist on a free alignment afterward.
The dealers will probably try to sell you new tie rods while they are doing the recall. Get them if you need them, if it were me I'd replace mine first, then go in and have the "relay rod" replaced and get a free alignment.

Dale thank you so much for showing that. I'm calling tomorrow asap. I just installed an inner cv boot tonight and while doing so, concluded that I have a rattle coming from cv's and the end of the tie rods(or relay rod). This could be an answered prayer. Thanks again for the post...and thanks Nathan for postin it through utulsa

Good luck Kyle, let me know if you need any help with the tie rods, I did mine last year and they were easy with a puller.

I still have itin my cell phone from back when I replaced my first runner. I called them so often that they started to answer the phone by saying "Toyota Canada. Is this Blair calling in another VIN?"

I've been playing on some great trails, out by Gunter. Hydro lines, rock, even an abandoned runway that I flew out to last month. Great campsites, etc... Maybe time for an Ontario Fall Colours Tour??? Send me your email and I'll send you some pics.

For all you Canadians
For all you Canadians. I called the 1-800 number yesterday and the door knob didn't have a clue what I was talking about & said no there are no recalls for your truck. I called again today and I got someone who knows something. He said that the comupter system hasn't been updated for the canadian VIN numbers yet, so he can't tell if my truck is included. He said that it will be the middle of October when they start sending out letters.
Matt

Anyone (Like Kyle/outdoorfever) who hasn't done the idler arm bushing repair yet, should expect to do this, or have this done along with the recall.
My theory is that some people let that bushing wear down too much, then when the bushing is gone, the eye of the idler arm starts wearing down. Eventually, that eye will be the weakest link... When it's thin enough, it will form the stress fracture which that Toyota is recognizing. That would explain why it's a recall, the bushing wears out whether you're on the road or off... I really think a bronze bushing would be better in there than that plastic piece...anybody wanna start making them? EDIT: I had forgotten which end the bushings were on! On Kyle's truck, the joint between the idler arm and the relay rod is worn out... I was thinking the infamous idler arm bushing was in that joint...

Great to
still have warranty, after 15 years isn't it? Almost a million vehicles involved. I expect about 850,000 to return for the service.

As quoted above:
Yeah, I do think it's sort of funny. Can't you see a roomful of Toyota engineers looking at a relay rod, scratching their heads and saying 'Hmmm, this part wore out after 200,000 miles and 16 years, this is just unacceptable.' LOL

I called Toyota today and my 94 truck is part of the recall campaign. I asked about the alignment and according to them the relay rod is in between the tie rods and when removed will require re-alignment of the front end. Toyota stated that the alignment was included at no charge as part of the campaign which works for me as I need an alignment anyway.

i called today and they said they will "check the alignment" but didn't necessarily say they would do an alignment service ...
sounds squishy to me...

I have to drive my sisters honda civic. She lives overseas. But i put a sheet of papaer on the back that says "MY REAL CAR IS A TOYOTA 4RUNNER" I really hate little cars, its red too, so i feel like a woman...in the car. not saying red cars arent cool... just a red honda civic...come on now |

this is one of my first posts on this board, but i have been a habitual reader here for about a year or so. i called to see if my 94 4runner was covered under the recall and they said it was. my question is...ive been told by a friend/mechanic of mine that my pitman arms are worn out. i have an appointment with him to replace them in a couple weeks but i dont know if i should have him do that before or after i take it in for the recall. what do you guys think?
also, i dont know if i need an alignment or not. im guessing that i do because the truck pulls to the left a little. also, in the past few months it has slowly developed a shake around 60-65 miles per hour. it felt kind of like a tire was out of balance, so i had them rebalanced and the shake is still there. possibly this could be fixed by an alignment. hopefully they will do this at no charge. any thoughts on this are very welcome. thanks. dewey |

Mine is covered by the warranty! Woohoo! My 4runner is 2wd too. So, they got my new address and they are in the process of sending me out the letter.

I called Toyotas 1-800 number, to see if my 4runner was affected by the recall, and they couldn't tell me. Apperantly my 4runner is not on any of their databases, I tought this was wierd so I double checked my VIN# on my truck, and they could not find it on their database. I called to see if my truck was affected by the recall if it would be serviced, since I am in Germany, they said yes, but they can't find my truck. They said that they would get a specialist to look into this, I called on Thursday night, I am still waiting for answer. Oh yeah and yes my truck is US SPECS. Has anything like this happened to any of you??
