SAS-axle type

I am looking at getting a 2nd gen 4runner and then doing and SAS. What other options are there for the front axle instead of using a toyota axle? Is there any point in going with a non-toyota axle in the front and keeping the toyota axle in the rear?

Thanks,
Brandon

you could get a d44 or d60.

I used an 85 front axle because it was cheap and there's a great aftermarket. You can get toyota front axle shafts that are stronger than stock d60 shafts.

You could also have a diamond axle housing built in a custom width if you don't want to run wheel spacers or 2" backspaced wheels, but that's $$$.

My front axle is fully built (30 spline longs, an ARB, 5.29's, the only thing i'm missing is the chromolly hub gears) and I have less than $2k in it. Price out what it costs to fully build a d60.

dont worry about the heavy D44. If you want strength, use an upgraded D60. If you want toy parts, use a toyota axle and upgrade the hell out of it. Either way gunna cost about the same. D60's can be upgraded to be super strong, but that is $$$.

Or, just say forget it and put in a Uni-Mog axle w00t!!

Yeah, toyota or D44 out of a Wagoneer are the most common, but you could put anything you like up there really... D60, 9", Rockwell LOL

Now to my next question, where can I find a good 85 axle? Do I have to look for people parting them out or is there a good site that has some for sale?

I see that you are in Westminster, CO. I also live in Westminster, as does Ric. I would suggest looking on www.craigslist.com as you can find some great deals on their. Other than that look in the paper and find the Toyota junk yards in Denver and they might have some to. If you need a hand with anything shoot me a PM and I'm sure that Ric would be willing to go wheeling with you any time as he goes just about every weekend.

x2 on craigslist....that's where I found mine. Just be patient....you should be able to get a complete axle from locking hub to locking hub for $225-$300.

So Ric, you are gonna do a SAS huh, when is this going to happen? Or are you still in the planning stages? Didn't you also just regear and lock the front of the IFS?

Realistically yes. That's a fair price IMO, but to find someone selling an axle for that price atleast in Washington has been hard.

I got my axle, no joke, hub to hub, rotors, calipers, 3rd, completely straight off the truck for $200. I jumped on that like a dog on a rabbit. But the months preceding the find (which the find was totally on accident) people wanted $300 - $400 for incomplete front axles (missing calipars, no 3rd, no gears, no axle shafts, no hubs, stuff like that missing).

Point being, be patient if you want to find a yota front axle. Wait for the one that has all the parts, in the right condition at the right price to come along. Don't give up and spend $300 on an axle that someone has welded on, modified or is missing stuff.

There is no point in going with anything domestic up front.

I have two Diamond axles, Toyota based. I run 37's on them, a co-worker runs 44's.

Putting a 60 under a Toy is not worth the hassle. If you are wheeling a 2nd Gen 4Runner, you don't need 1-tons. The time and money to make it as strong as my Diamond not to mention the hassle are not worth it on a bodied rig.

I don't know about that. Scout Diffs are D44's w/ p-side drop, and just about the right width. Would take some fiddling to get the SAE fittings to work.

I agree that there isn't really a reason to go with anything but Toyota, it's just so easy, everything bolts in and matches up. But sometimes something comes along you just can't pass up.

, no, Im not going to do a SAC on mine, no need, IMO the IFS suites me just fine. maybe, in the future, when my skills, and the trails I do justify a solid axle, but not anytime soon, lol
I was going to be getting an 85 pick up, and was planning on the Diamond axles. sorry to confuse ya.

Didn't you also just regear and lock the front of the IFS?
yes and no, I did regear it last year (4:88s) no I didnt do a front locker.

Except a Toy driveline won't bolt to a Dana.

And the brake lines.

And the limited gearing matches.

And the sprung under factor.

So yeah, it makes a lot of sense.

You can put anything under these trucks. The question is how much BS do you want to shovel to get it there.

I looked into a D44. I could of got it for 100 bucks complete. Alot of work to narrow it. Last Friday I picked up a 84 4runner front axle complete with front drive shaft for $200.
