The 3.0 is not a turd... 1, It doesn't help things when Billy Bob put it back together, under the shade tree out back. And 2, The 22RE set the bar pretty dang high...

So naturally? Consumers expect it, the 3.0, to be a 22RE with 2 more pistons and 40 more hp... And that aint gonna happen.

You can not run these motors low on oil or water, I say one time... And they should be rebuilt with top notch components... Not up-side-down or dime store gaskets...

I can never understand why ppl think a Toyota engine put back together with the cheapest parts, will last as long and be as trouble free as it was when Toyota built it, with Toyota parts...

But I'll just get on the internet and poo poo it if it doesn't...

mines not getting rebuilt with ALL toyota parts, but it's got a few, like water pump is AISIN, and the timing belt and tensioners.

i expect my motor to last a good while....but it only NEEDS to last a few years, because a 3.4 or a V8 is getting put in it's place

So if your rings and bearings are good, go for it!

Any time I had my heads off they'd go to a shop PERIOD! No FSM rebuilds, let the shop magna flux, check for warpage, new guides, seals and above all MAKE DANG SURE THEY SET THE VALVES!!! (it's shim and bucket, so I refuse to mess with them)

I had a friend do that once and the machine shop guy was going through some hard times and FORGOT to set the valves! You know how fun putting a 3.0 in would be only to have in not run worth a soggy biscuit?

Then after that, since the engines been open. Run it about 100 miles then change the oil. Then I'd say again @ 1-2,000 miles... Just in case particles got in the engine.

I had an oil..uhh 'problem' with mine too... I weighed all the costs and benefits and ended up ordering a replacement from Jasper. It was a bit high on the price, but I believe all in all it was worth it

I see alot of bashing of the 3.0, and I have had one. Most I see have 200k plus miles on them. They seem to run forever. I dont particulary care for one with and automatic, but I dont like the 22re with an auto either. I currently have a 22re and the 3.4, but the right 3.0 came along I would go for it. I was very happy with my 3.0.

A lot of people bash the 3.0 because they listen to what people say and nothing more. I believe the term is that they are "sheep". I have a truck with a 22R and a 4runner with a 3VZ. The truck has a manual tranny and the 4runner has an auto, and my 4runner will run circles around my truck all day long. And yes the 3VZ feels underpowered with the auto, but drive a 4runner with a 22R-E and auto, now that is underpowered

My old '91 4x4 longbed, with the 3.0 went 312,000 miles BEFORE I had that engine rebuilt, and lost it with another 295,000 on the clock.

My '91 4Runner now has almost 257,000 on the clock, and the previos owner had the engine rebuilt at 190,000 cuz he was always towing his 36' boat with it.

The 3.0 is a decent motor, if you take care of it.....

Some people are "sheep" I suppose but that term can be applicable anywhere not just when talking about motors. I can only speak from experience and that's what I do.
I've owned 3 4Runners with the 3VZE in my life and I am on my third 22RE right now.
My first 91 4Runner auto 3VZE was slow as hell and terrible on gas. It had 144K when I sold it and the head gaskets had been done by Toyota years before I bought it.

My second and third 3VZE 2nd gen 4Runners both blew the head gaskets and had other mechanical issues as well. I took very good care of all of them so I think a 3VZE can and WILL blow the head gaskets and/or burn valves no matter how good you take care of it. I have had friends that have had bad experiences with the 3VZE as well. I have witnessed the suckiness of the 3.0 first hand so it's shortcomings are very real to me. Personally, I want a reliable vehicle that is economical and easy to work on and I have given the 3.0 a chance but in my personal experience I have had much better luck with 22re trucks. You know, there is a reason why Toyota put out a recall on the 3VZE, and they still honor it.
Some will last a while don't get me wrong they are still Toyota's but they are nowhere near as reliable or economical as the 22RE period.

i love the 22re, my truck has 137k mile on it and i recently blew a head gasket (only real problem with 22re) because the kid i bough it off of beat the livving piss out of it, and never changed the oil. my grandfathers truck has 22re with 300k+ on it, out lasted 3 frames. Ive heard good and bad things about the 3.0. it seems if you take care of every motor you have and maintain it its going to last a long time.

I do agree that the 3.0 is not a powerhouse engine, and with the auto, is gutless as all hell, but mine have been nothing but reliable FOR ME. Are they as reliable as the 22RE, for some, but generally not. I've worked on a few of my buddies 3.0's and I actually like working on them. I cannot speak on the 22RE, as I have never owned 1, my very 1st Toyota 4x4 had a 22R.
The 22RE has it problems, too. I have a few friends who have nothing but problems with thier 22RE's. But they are hard on their junk. All engines have problems, just not as problem-matic as the 3.0, I'll admit. Would I buy another 3.0, prolly not. I would go 3.4, if the price was right.....
It all really boils down to how you take care of them (any engine), and how hard you push your rig. The 3.0 really doesn't like to be pushed....

Damn, check your o2 sensor, pea! I was getting 22-24 mpg running 70 everywhere in So Cal! And I was still getting passed up!

My auto gets 17 on the freeway here in Wa.

And 'bleeder.....um....nice avatar!

Mine dropped the #6 valve seat at 125k miles (see my avatar). That Toyota quality was not working for me very well when I had to pull my motor because they botched the press fit on the valve seat in the head.

Yea 4runnerfreak that wasn't all that fair. 287000 miles on the engine, cel light on, has a miss that has been a mistry for a while. Trying to get my hands on a desil half cut from Japan! Thats why I have let it go. Tough as nails though! Run the crap out of it, and still tickin!

Like there's not a single post by some meatball on this board with a 22R w/ stock gears on 35's, that does not have that exact phrase in it

I'm surprised nobody made a comment when I brought up the fact that a 22R with an auto is wayyy slower than a 3VZ with an auto

Whaddaya mean geared? 4.56's are the factory gearing for a V6 with a manual tranny with the 31 inch tire package. If that truck was geared it would have 4.88's in place of the 4.56's
