Yes....Toyota is the only one that has these specific washer plates. Keep track of which washer plate came off of which side.....mark and measure everything. Mark the 2 bearing caps so they go on exactly as before.

Well.......As cold weather approaches I guess its time to revive this thread! I left you all last winter having just finished my rear 488 swap.... Its now time to finish what I started. I pulled my spare diff out of my parts truck. I wanted to work on this one so I could keep driving my truck and then just swap it out. So.... as I get things ordered and completed I will try to post as mush as I can. As of right now its sitting on the bench all covered in nasty while I drain the Lube. The rear has been doing great! 2500 miles with no problems! Oil looked great when I changed it at 200 miles!

Great job on the rear! You'll do the same with the front.

Just one thing I noticed when reviewing your pics, when you're using the bearing separator in the press,

bridge the steel plates with the separator plate halves, not with the bolt sides.

Much stronger that way, and no risk of bending the separator bolts.

I just finished installing a Truetrac carrier in a 7.5 ifs front and had some shimming issues to overcome because the Timken bearings that came in my install kit were thinner than the original Jap bearings that came out.

All good now though.

Good to see you're still at it!!

ZUK.... I'm glad you are still here! I can't do this without you! I will get this thing decreased and disassembled and measure everything, and post pictures. I will be sure to mark the bearing caps and mark/measure the shims to their respective position. I'm feeling good about doing the front......most of what I do in 4wd is at crawling speed and wont see many miles. Also......I know the 7.5 are very different than the 3rd member rears but I do have some experience now.

I also need rotors and front axles so I will add that on here too.

Sounds good. I made some notes long ago about the different carrier bearings often found in the master install kits.

Nachi 17887 cone/ 17831S cup (correct offset for 4 cylinder)verified
Nachi 17887 cone/ 17831 cup (need to add .030" shim behind LEFT bearing and .020 behind right bearing)
Timken LM603049 cone/LM603015 cup (need to add .030" shim behind LEFT bearing and .020 behind right bearing)
Timken LM603049 cone/LM603014 cup (need to add .081" shim behind both bearings)

"V6" carrier bearing ....Toyota Part # 90368-50006 (50mm journal)
Nachi 50KB801LT cone/50KB801 cup correct offset verified

axle stub inner c-clip(2 desired) 90521-29002 retail $1.15

24mm pinion nut 90179-18001 retail $6.67

Solid collar final length~~2.170~2.179"

axle seal----IFS 7.5" front 3rd (2 needed for non-vacuum type) 90311-35032 $14.08 retail (86~95) verified

Needle bearings---- 90364-33009 ....used on ADD fronts(because the stubs are spinning 100% of the time)
Non-ADD IFS fronts do not have needles...they have machined swirl marks. Axles only turn when the manual locking hubs are engaged.

Thanks for the advice. I realized after the fact that I needed to spin my separator in the press. Will I avoid any of the bearing issues If I re-use them.

Well, I haven't gotten very far yet. I spent a bunch of time scraping mud and grease off of it. What a mess. I already winterized my pressure washing otherwise that would have saved me some time.

I'm Back at it.

Well I finally got around to pulling my gears out of the front diff. It went smoothly. Everything looks in good condition. I am not planning on replacing the bearings. They all look and feel like new. This diff was low miles. Zuk, Here are the measurements on all the shims and stuff.

Left pre-load shim: .114
Right Pre-load shim: .116
Pinion Shim: .096

I put a little goop on the original gears but couldn't get much of a pattern.....looks like it was riding on the very outside of the teeth. but that might be because I didnt clean the gear oil off.

Your readings/measurements look spot on. Re-using the bearings in the front 3rds is perfectly acceptable. The yellow paint though does not show too much. Apply tension on the pinion flange while turning the ring gear with a 17mm wrench will produce a nice smear.

I have everything apart now so im not too worried about the wear patter....it was more for curiosity than anything. I'm glad you are still watching this thread... I know I will need advice. I will be ordering parts soon. I am excited to get this back together.

For some strange reason I love reading gear setup threads. I did my rear maybe 2 years ago and I must have spent days reading every install on Zuks site, he makes it seem so doable. To me the pattern is the real art, the rest is just careful measurements. Having Zuk look at your work is awesome, and his stamp of approval is like gold. Great job so far and keep feeding us pics please.

Thanks Cory, Yes I am the same way..... My wife thinks im crazy but I can look at pictures of gears and greasy shims all day.....I read many more hours than I actually spend in the shop. I couldn't agree with you more about ZUK. His input has been invaluable! I would still be stuck shimming my rear pinion if it wasn't for him! Zuk.....I feel like I need to send you fruit basket or something when this is all over! I actually pryed myself away from reading gear threads and got my other toy(jeep) out this weekend. I would have taken the yota but, 4wd isn't an option.....obviously! It was a blast! Mud, Ice, Snow! There were 4 of us. I cant wait to get the yota together and hit the trails! I hope we get some more snow soon. Here is a little pic/vid to keep this thread interesting until I get more gear progress photos! I would like put 4.56's in the jeep at some point....

Wow Cory I almost feel sorry for you for trying to load the 150+ links and 2 gigabytes of pictures.
I have heard that before about that I make it look so easy. Believe me, there's always a diff out there
that throws a monkey wrench at me

Driving that CJ will make you really appreciate the Yota Fruit baskets are welcome.
Address is in my email signatures and also in the box.htm link
Nice video.

Zuk - ate up some company bandwidth today looking at some of those Harrop installs!

To anybody following these kinds of threads who has used Zuk's site, I just noticed that way down on the bottom he has a little link for Paypal to support his website. Just sayin' it's there in case anybody has relied upon his vast knowledge and wants to make sure that site stays up.

Thanks for the plug,Cory.
The site has been up for 12 years now under the gearinstalls.com domain name......
I expect it to be on the air at least another 12.
Then at some point I may sell the site name and contents within if the right online ring and pinion operation makes the right retirement offer.....
I'm retired now by the way. It's nice to have control over my own time.

So you ate some of their bandwidth.......cool. You know that there is a nice Harrop e-locker model for the 4cyl 8" diffs and also fits the V6 8" diffs (#9334)......86 thru 95 4Runners and pick-ups.

I gotta say.....Ken Francisco ("Zuk" / Gear Installs) is just about the coolest gear guy around. He is a great partner for our business (Cruiser Brothers/Yotalockers as Harrop importer) and has done great work for many of our customers.

Quick Reply: Regular guy with regular tools gear swap (Lots of pics)
