No start after valve cover gasket replacement: code 41&51

No start after valve cover gasket replacement: code 41&51
Actually it starts, but only stays running for less than a second.
Vehicle: 1990 SR5 V6
Problem: Vehicle won't stay running for more than .5 seconds after installation of passenger side valve cover gasket; outputs codes 41 and 51 after resetting ECU
I performed a number of diagnostic tests per factory instructions listed below.
At the ECU (voltage tests)
TPS tests:
E2 - VC = passed
E2 - IDL = passed
E2- VTA = failed (I believe this is the output back to the ECU from the TPS)
VAFM tests:
E2 - VC = passed
E2 - VS = passed
E2 - THA = passed
At the part (resistance tests)
TPS tests:
OL at every contact; I've been moving it around to find some resistance but haven't received any readings other than OL
VAFM tests:
E2 - VS = failed (760 Ohms reading, greater than the 600 Ohms threshold)
E2 - VC = passed
E2 - THA = passed
Additional info:
- the engine ground underneath the plenum looked a little rusty but not severe
- You can smell fuel when attempting to start
Any ideas? I'm stumped and like most people, I am desperate to get this vehicle running. If it is not against forum rules I'd even offer a small reward for the correct suggestion.
