my new truck

just got home from picking up my new truck. 1986 yota pickup 22rte 134k miles, truck looks to be mint but well see better in the am
i used to have a 94 in mint cond with just the 22re

so far ive realized:
i now can pass people in 5th on the highway (stock tires vs 32s or turbo?)
much notchier shifting
no passenger side view mirror
no ac
not as much ground clearance to fit bigger tires stock vs stock compared to the 94
all in all, happy with the purchase and I LOVE THESE TRUCKS

Looks like a nice truck, take a picture of it in the day time so we can get a better look at it. Gets some interior shots as well.

You are corrected. The infamous R151F (manual transmission) resides behind the 22RTE, in some models. These are where the bulletproof 23 spline, gear driven t-cases came from.

you are correct sir
and this is why im so happy with the purchase... $2200
heat never got above the middle of the gauge on the 250 mile drive from Connecticut back home on LI

ill get some more pics today for everyone, def gatta get some more height out of the truck and get some more ponies out of that turbo, but since the tires are brand spankin new im a little reluctant to cough up dough for 33s

2 questions:
1. the manual locking hub on the pass side doesnt turn a full half turn like the drives side, but it does click like its locking and unlocked in only a 1/8 turn of the hub, and it does go into 4x4 and work, and back into 2wd and work, should i be concerned or no?
2. under the tach is says Turbo and under moderate throttle above like 2500rpm a green light comes on next to it, thats just saying the turbo has spooled up correct?

great find. the auto trans was mainly a 4Runner thing (lots of the turbo 4Runners were automatics). study up on turbos now and see what you can do for it. after preformance is where you want, you can change tires.

good luck.

Nice find!
The turbo light does indicate that your turbo is spooling.
If you really want to find out about the 22rte then you need to go to http://www.22rte-trucks.com This site has a wealth of information and the moderators like Mosk and dcg9381 have really experimented with these engines in the performance dept.
22rte 4Runners were all autos, the r151f manual was only available as an option in the pickups. SR5 4Runners came with a digital dash option as well as other dressup items, this option was not available in the pickup. If you read up on the specs, the consensus is that these came with the 4 pinion differential before the v6, but the code plate on my 86 factory SR5 22rte 4Runner says that it is a 2 pinion with 4.10 gears, so if they were indeed 4 pinion, I suspect that only the manual had the 4 pinion rear. It would be interesting to see what your code plate says.
Welcome to the 22rte world!

ok so some bad news, went outside to take some pics and do a daylight inspection and found the frame was rotted through next to the gas tank, so the trucks at the auto body shop now getting that fixed
next question, does the r151f have a reverse synco? it grinds ALOT when putting it in reverse but im pretty sure that older cars didnt have a synco for reverse, jsut want to make sure its suppose to be like that and its not that the synco is shot

anyways, heres some more pics:

and from that pic you can see i need an AAL in the rear, anyone got one laying around? i had some extra leafs but of course my dad threw em out when i was at college

S'Wrong with the AAL?
I have one, it flexes pretty darn well, and isnt too stiff on the road.

Nice find on the turbo.

My r151f does the same going into reverse. It helps to put it into first then reverse.

I would add a leaf into the pack.
I am not sure why this seems to get a bad name on here.
I have 51" toyota rear springs on my 4runner, 3 inches longer than your rear leafs. There are 7 leafs in the pack mostly long springs. The top 4 are toyota and the bottom 3 are S-10 which is stiffer and has more arch. They give me about 4 inches of lift. This is equivalent of 4 AAL. It rides very nice on the road and I wouldn't consider the wheel travel in the rear all that bad.

How much you think the welding for the frame rot will set you back? I'm in the same situation.

havent looked at the thread in a while. the frame cost $80 then i gave the guy a $20 tip because i was feeling generous lol

so far ive added a boost gauge and wideband, 1" blocks, procomp AAL, 33s, and did a full tune up...

still on the list: boost controller, new shifter boots, cup holder, passenger side view mirror,
