Mechanic Needed In La, Blown Motor
Does anyone know of good wrench in the LA area? I blew my head Gasket wheelin a couple weeks ago in Gormin. I've got 300k on my 90 3.0 manual 4runner. I figured if im going to do the head gasket i may as well rebuild all the way do to the high miles. I had it towed to TLC in Van Nuys and they do great work and have done great work on my 85 Land Cruiser and my 4 runner but they want 8k for a rebuild and i just cant afford that. I've got so much new stuff on the truck im not ready to junk it. If I had the garage space and the time i would part it out and dedicate all my money into the LC but i dont have either. they will put a used motor in for me as well but i cant seem to find one from a trusted source and all of the used ones or junk trucks i find have to many miles on them. Help me out please. i hate to see my runner die this way.

Pfft.
No one ever tells me when they are going to gorman.
There was a guy in long beach. For the life of me, i cant remember his name... He's on pine street. i think.

unless it was blowing smoke out the exhaust or has "bad" engine noises before the headgasket issue, there really is no reason to rebuild the engine - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Replace the part that's broken (head gasket) and be done with it

I was pulling my buddies single axle 4wheeler trailer south on the 5 up hill. started pinging really bad over heated blew white smoke. im pretty sure i warped a head. it was bad. I did manage to get to the top and coast 10 miles down with motor off. TLC tells me i should rebuild. i do trust those guys and they do awesome work. but again there is a lg price to pay and im all about "you get what you pay for" but i just dont have 8 grand for it. i work on the road so never have the time to do the work and again dont have the space so im stuck needing a good mechanic at a decent price or saying good bye to her for ever.

Try LA Toyota, or Toyota's Only. They are Toyota parts yards, around Glenoaks & Truxton in the San Fernando Valley. They should have some lower milage engines......

the market is tough right now, business is slow, so even though you trust them, they may still give you the bigger of the 2 options. The 3.0L has a cast iron block, right? that means it is highly unlikely that the block warped. sight unseen, you should just need to have the head pulled, machined (and pressure tested) and reinstalled.
