installing a atv winch on your toyota
i live here in redding C.A. and have probly seen 10 trucks running around with atv winches like this one 1200 lb pull capacity. Is this the new thing or what??? I know there alot cheaper but u cant expect that to recover a truck. anyone else seen this before????

Only in Kalifornia.
FWIW, I've been in situations where my warn 9K was bogged down to a near stall. I guess a 1200lb winch would be helpful for pulling weeds or unwanted shrubs out of your garden. Other than that, I can't imagine what else you'd do with it (besides putting in on an atv).

No offense, but Redding California is full of the lowest common denominator types. These people hangout at bolt on industries dreaming of the ultimate flat-biller or bro truck while trying to polish the turd they currently own.
Yes, I live here, so the ATV winch thing does not surprise me

Actually, I use my 4rnr for firewood during the winter months and quite frequently have to pull the trees out of the woods to get it to the road. Usually, I cut and split it and then pull it on a sled.....lots of work! But, I've considered putting an ATV wench on just for that. It would probably also come in handy times I'm salvaging heavy building materials. That's all I'd used it for, though. I'd make it easily detachable, too.
On the other hand, if I had the dough, I'd just get a real wench.

Snatch blocks?! That's a damn fine idea. Cable, though? I found some 1200lb test poly rope last winter at a local outdoor supplier I've been using to repair the barn roof....as safety line with blocks and climbing harness. Much cheaper than cable and lighter to haul. Now you've got me thinking, though. The runner, the rope, the snatch blocks...hmmm...may not need a winch.<<<BUT IT WOULD SO FOIKIN' COOL!!!>>>> Ha! I'd be the envy of all my rural neighbors. I actually have one distant neighbor who has a Warn on his Cheep. I don't think it's worked in years. Oh well, atleast he looks good with his 35's and camo paint.

I have one of those self contained one we used it on a timber framed building to lift some heavy logs up into place then I used it to pull a wall square on a project where the guy effed up a corner.
then I used it to pull a non running 4 runner on to a trailer.
also pulled a 1970 VW bus onto a trailer.
I would only carry it as a last resort but I have a 20k comealong for if I get stuck

Warn M8000 winch:
Line pull on first layer: 8000lb at 8 ft/min., 100ft of cable.
Warn 1.5ci ATV winch:
Line pull on first layer: 1500lb at 5 ft/min., 50ft of 1/4" cable.
To pull 8000lbs at a distance of 100' you'd need 4 snatch blocks and replace the stock cable with 500ft of 5/16" cable. Also, you'd only see a line speed of 1ft/min! Roughly 8 hours later, you might be done!
Another thing to note; the Warn 1.5ci only uses a 10 gauge power wire (I don't even consider that a "cable" )
On to prices from 4Wheel Parts:
Warn 8000M w/ 100' of 5/16" cable: $526
Warn 1.5ci ATV Winch w/ 50' of 1/4 cable: $261
100ft 5/16" main cable replacement: $140
4: 50' 5/16" cable extensions $82 each = $328
4 snatch blocks at $66 each = $264
Grand total: $993

No arguing with your facts. But, I haven't even the $261 for the ATV wench...much less the 8000m. And the snatch blocks? THOSE are expensive. I can get the same much, much cheaper at the Tractor Supply. In fact, I have two already...
You should know I have no knowledge or experience with winches and their technical aspects. I just live in the woods and make do with what I have and what I can afford. At the moment, I can only dream of something like an 8000m. I suppose in my thinking an ATV winch was/is more in my budget. In light of your informed reasoning, even a used ATV winch at say $50 is still an impractical (even use downright useless) waste of time and energy. I'll have to look into one of those utility winches. Who knows, I may find a good 8000m or equivalent at an auction. (I've just started going to those). Lots of farm equipment, etc. always going at good prices there. If nothing else, I still have a sled and my donkey.
Gentlemen, meet Fred.
HEEHAW! I got your winch, wench! Hahaha!

For thos of y'all that are running 8000 lb winches, have any of you (or anyone else for that matter), weighed your 4Runner fully load with all the gear you wheel with (people and food included) ??
