when i had my pickup i sanded mine down a bit and painted it stainless steel from rust oleum. i also did the grill, around the lights and a couple of other things. it stood out a little bit but i think it looked good.

sand it down, take some fine grit to an orbtal sander, then just clear coat it
just give it a bare metal, or maybe a brushed aluminum look. I like the way bare metal with clear over it looks
hmmmmm...
you may have just changed my plans!
hell, if it doesn't come out right, I'm paint'n it red anyway, so then I'll just paint it red, lol

Best picture I have of mine.
I just used a piece of diamond plate that was going to be scrap otherwise.
I dont wheel this truck so I can't really make any judgements of strength, but it's almost twice as thick as a stocker and goes further up for more lower radiator protection.
I very hastily took a hand grinder and notched out the two spots where the clevice mounts poke through. I still need to go back and clean those up, but will probably wait until the temperature outside is in the double digits again.

You can still test strength of a skid plate going through the mud though. Some may not consider it wheeling, as i don't really, but it's hard to believe that you don't wheel when your truck looks like that.
